Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Minutes before the much anticipated debut of the Chevy Camaro Z28, it was all over Twitter that the car revealed would actually be a ZL1. A high performance Camaro, the aluminum hood is raised with a vented insert, rear diffusers and spoiler, and 20 inch forged aluminum wheels. Under the hood is the LSA 6.2L V8 engine with a 6-speed manual transmission. The ZL1′s power comes from a supercharged aluminum-block 6.2-liter V8 producing an estimated 550 hp.

The interior is given as much attention as the exterior design with microfiber suede inserts on heated leather seats. Unique to the ZL1 is a leather wrapped shifter and steering wheel, redesigned with the bottom of the wheel squared off and ZL1 badges. The ZL1 is still in development, though, and is projected to be available in early 2012. The ZL1 name is taken from the 1969 Camaro ZL1, which had an aluminum block 440-hp 427-cubic inch V8.

I can’t really comment here. I am a home mechanic so I do most repairs myself and pay wholesale for parts so save a ton of money there, but if i had to go to the garage all the time it would be very expensive.

By Dan Tsuchiya

Pros

  • Attractive styling that appeals to both genders
  • Direct injection turbocharged engine with power that comes on very early
  • Handling feels closer to a European sport sedan and AWD to boot
  • Ultra-luxurious cabin with intuitive controls

Cons

  • Exterior side mirrors are really big
  • Luxury isn’t cheap
  • Can get thirsty if you have heavy feet
  • Some interior squeaks

Many years ago there was a mini-sport utility vehicle called the Jeep – versatile, rugged, and largely uncomfortable. The Jeep’s popularity spawned multiple knock-offs from every carmaker — from the ill-fated Suzuki Samurai to the successful RAV4. All three continents have been trying to get it right for the past 30 years and it wasn’t until automakers tried converting cars into sport utility vehicles that the modern compact SUV was born.

SEMA 2010 logoHeld each year in Las Vegas, Nevada, the SEMA Show 2010 is an industry event for the Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association.

Much more than just a trade show, SEMA brings together tuners and parts suppliers from across the auto industry to display their latest products using some of the most highly-modified and colorful vehicles anywhere in the world. Sometimes these creations are things of beauty, and some time they are outright disasters, which is part of what makes the SEMA Show so entertaining. Sharing the trade show floor along with the modified hot rods, muscle cars and sport compact cars, will be some mainstream automakers that are bringing an increasingly important presence at SEMA.

CarReview's Best SUV and Crossover Choices of 2010

Monday October 18th, 2010 at 2:1010 PM

best_suv_crossover_2010_300x230Five Standout SUVs/Crossovers – CarReview’s Recommendations for 2010

By Greg Gaillard and the CarReview editorial team

In the 1990s when the practical minivan began to seem passé, consumers turned their heads and wallets to the fledgling Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) market for some excitement to suit their new active lifestyles. The watchful eye of corporate marketing caught the emerging trend and aggressively promoted the ready-for-anything aura of the new Ford Explorer and instantly identifiable Jeep Cherokee. It worked.

Over the next 20 years manufacturers have refined the SUV from an inefficient 4 door truck glazed with rugged styling into some of the more sophisticated vehicles on the market. The crossover refinements have spawned a dizzying array of choices all called SUV or some variation if SUV (Think BMW’s sports activity vehicle designation for its X-series). While today’s models are much better than their forbearers, picking the best SUV/crossover is not as easy as it once was.

CarReview believes the current market has some great SUVs that do something better than the rest. To select the top 5, contributors used criteria that align with the original vision for the segment.

2011 Audi A8 Review – Premium luxury in a refined, understated package

Friday September 3rd, 2010 at 7:99 AM
Posted by: AKramer

By Alex Kramer

Pros:

  • Smooth and powerful direct injection V8 engine
  • Brilliant 8 speed automatic transmission
  • Adjustable air suspension goes from sports sedan firm to la-Z-boy cush
  • Impressive array of active safety features
  • Adaptive cruise control works so well you wonder why the car can’t drive itself
  • 3 words – massaging front seats

Cons:

  • Interior is a bit small for a full-size luxury sedan, especially in back
  • Exterior style remains largely unchanged and is still rather understated

Often overshadowed in America by rivals Mercedes and BMW, especially in the mid and full-size luxury categories, Audi is looking to make the case that it is the premier German nameplate. For 2011 the flagship A8 luxury sedan gets thoroughly reworked, although you’d hardly know by looking at the car. Though the styling remains largely unchanged and quite reserved, much has been modified underneath the sheet metal. By combining advanced technology with smooth, refined performance, Audi has crafted a compelling alternative to other more flashy luxury saloons.

Audi Partners With Google Earth For The Best Navigation System

Monday August 30th, 2010 at 5:88 PM

Google Earth used in Audi's navigation system2011 Audi A8 to Feature Built-in Google Earth, Maps, and Local Search

The all-new 2011 Audi A8 incorporates more technological advances and wizardry than a Boeing 787. Highlights include an aluminum Audi Space Frame (ASF) that is 40% lighter and 25% stiffer than a comparable chassis made of steel and Audi’s pre-sense safety system for avoiding accidents and for minimizing their consequences. One technological highlight that is immediately appreciated by anyone seated in the redesigned A8 flagship is Audi’s fifth generation Multi-Media Interface (MMI) with a touchpad and navigation system, using the same embedded Google Earth application used in the iPhone and Droid, only adapted into an automotive application. This is the first time ever Google Maps has been incorporated into a car.

Not surprising, Audi and Google have teamed up to have Google Earth pre-installed into the 2011 A8. Previewed at this year’s CES, the completed system won the award for Best Embedded Telematics Navigation Product at the 2010 Telematics conference in Detroit.

2011 Audi A7

Audi is targeting a new market segment with the A7 Sportback, which is scheduled to make its debut late next year as a 2011 model. The large five-door model with the dynamically accentuated rear end brings together the best of three worlds: the sporty elegance of a coupe, the comfort of a sedan and the practicality of a station wagon.

Audi has just released the complete details and images of the new Audi A7 which had its public unveiling at the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, Germany. Video of the unveiling ceremony is below. Did she say, “tight butt?”

Video: Audi A1 "The Next Big Thing" Mini Series Part 6 of 6

Thursday June 10th, 2010 at 2:66 PM

The new Audi A1 episode movie: The final episode reveals the secret of “the next big thing”. And it´s definitely not what John (Justin Timberlake) or anybody expected. Visit the website http://www.audi.com/a1 to watch final episode once more and experience what happend behind the scenes.

YouTube Preview Image

This is the last installment of a six part mini-series and a huge letdown. The story was weak and the conclusion even weaker. I must admit the new A1 looks good, though.

I revisited The Hire BMW film series and even their weakest film short was 10 times better than this series. The legendary series of short “webisodes” featured A-list directors such as John Woo and Ridley Scott telling tales of the Hire, an enigmatic driver and the passengers that need his transportation and protection. My favorite was The Star. This short film was directed by Guy Ritchie and enlists his ex-wife, Madonna, to play the most spoiled and shallow diva on screen to date. Hilarious.

Audi please take note: storyline is key for any film to be successful and entertaining.

Visit the website http://www.audi.com/a1 to learn more about the Audi A1 and view behind-the-scenes footage. Click the link to view the first episode: The Next Big Thing
