Top Gear USAThe world’s most popular car-related TV show, produced in the U.K., is Top Gear. Lately, BBC America has been showing more reruns of Top Gear from past seasons and fewer new episodes from the 2010 season. Maybe they are holding back because the History Channel will begin airing a U.S. version of Top Gear. As we anxiously await, today the History Channel gives us a preview of what to expect from the team, and so far, it looks pretty good.

The visual style will be familiar to anyone that’s seen the original U.K.-version, though the tone and demeanor of hosts Adam Ferrara, Tanner Foust and Rutledge Wood are all-American. In this teaser clip, each host gets hold of their favorite Lamborghini and try to convince each other that theirs is the baddest bull of them all.

Lamborghini Goes Solar

solar panelsEverybody is getting serious about greening their companies, even folks like Lamborghini. Now I’ve got nothing against Lambo, quite the opposite in fact, but let’s face facts, they’re not the most efficient cars out there. Last time I checked, Lamborghinis where lucky to break into the double-digit MPG figures. Which is fine really, who in their right mind is going to commute in a Lambo?

At any rate, Lamborghini is going to make things greener and more efficient where they can, and in this particular case, they are drastically lowing their factory’s CO2 output, aiming to get a whopping 35% reduction by 2015.

The Italian automaker is installing 17,000 square meters of solar panels on its factory roof that will generate 1,582 MWh of electricity annually. Lambo is changing things on the inside of the factory too. Indoors they are improving insulation, lighting, and climate control as a way to get the factory-related CO2 emissions down by 30 percent by 2010, and cut by a total of 35% five years later.

Lamborghini says it made record deliveries and profits in 2008 but noted that the economic uncertainty has not left it unscathed.

On Wednesday, the German-owned company posted a pretax profit of euro 60 million ($79.6 million) last year. That was up 27 percent from euro 47.1 million in 2007. Net profit figures have not been released.

The company did not provide a forecast for 2009, but says “the overall target for 2009 year is to attain an overall profit.”

Automobili Lamborghini SpA put 300 of its 1,000 workers on short-time work weeks from February through May and did not rule out extending the option.

Lamborghini What's Up With The Estoque?

Lamborghini Estoque Concept

OK Lambo, just what is going on with your Estoque four-door show car from this year’s Geneva show? First you say it’s on, then you say it’s off, then you say that you didn’t say it was really, really cross your heart and hope to die to infinity off. What gives?

To bring you up to speed, the Estoque (that’s pronounced es-toke-AY for you non-Iberians out there) was this big sedan that Lamborghini rolled out to many oohs and ahs in Geneva. Motorheads had visions of this thing squaring off against big Mercs, BMWs and Audis, not to mention the upcoming Porsche Panamera. Then we kind of dropped into “a press release every hour” mode, and Lamborghini said it was on, it was off it was … well, that’s where we are now.

Lamborghini To Make Murcielago LP650-4 Roadster?

Lamborghini Murcielago LP460

What this? Lamborghini is considering a Murcielago LP650-4 Roadster? Oh please-please-please-please-please-please. Any good car is even better as a convertible, and Lamborghini’s Murcielago LP650-4 is a pretty good car to begin with.

Sure, the Murcielago, in LP650-4 or any other form, is about as subtle as anything every produced in Sant’Agata Bolognese, but why quibble at this point in time?

As reported by Left Lane News, “Lamborghini is readying a limited edition Murcielago drop top, believed to be called the Murcielago LP650-4 Roadster.” Well OK then. Supposedly the new, limited run model will use the same 650 horsepower V12 found in the Reventon, and the power will go to all four wheels. Which should translate is a 0 – 62 mph sprint in a brief 3.4 seconds.

To make the special Murcielago distinctive, the LP650-4 Roadster will get a matte gray with orange accents paint job on the outside, and a matching color scheme on the inside. Yeah, that sounds distinctive all right. The Roadster’s interior will also feature the extensive use of Alcantara and leather, and an asymmetric dashboard.

The car might just show up at the Geneva Motor Show, but since Lambo’s other special, the Murcielago LP670-4 SV is already schedule to make an appearance, the roadsters debut might be at another auto show. Oh, and in case you’re interested the price will be at least $380,000.
