Automotive Icon Gets a Major 21st Century Update

Volkswagen had the glow of a proud papa announcing the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle at the New York International Auto Show today. Looking to shed its feminine demeanor, VW redesigned the Beetle with the aim at attracting a more masculine audience. Gone is the flower vase that used to occupy the center dashboard area and the cavernous roof area. The revamped version gets some exterior tweaks that lend it a more sporty and dynamic look.

Volkswagen was quoted saying that the new Beetle is “longer, wider and lower, giving a more masculine and dynamic appearance.”

2012 BMW 6-Series CoupeBMW has announced the newest addition to their lineup, the third-generation 2012 6-Series 650i Coupe, set to go on sale this fall in the U.S.

The 2012 650i Coupe follows the launch this spring of the new 2012 650i Convertible

BMW’s new 6-Series coupe will feature a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8, 400-horsepower engine, 450 lb-ft of torque, an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters with an optional 6-speed manual transmission, a top speed of 155 mph and a 0-60 time of 4.8 seconds.

2012 Acura TL Sedan – We're Keeping Our Fingers Crossed

2012 Acura TL SedanAcura will soon debut the newly revamped 2012 Acura TL sedan at the Chicago Auto Show this week. Acura released a teaser photo of the car’s slightly refreshed rear, but what we’re really looking forward to is the reveal of the front fascia and the rest of the new TL’s specs. Public opinion and a lot of grumbling from our own team of editors at CarReview disliked the current style of the 2009 – 2011 Acura TL. Many are crossing their fingers, hanging garlic in their house, and picking up pennies everywhere with hopes that Acura will lose the ugly design of the current TL.

News About the 2012 Dodge Caliber

Tuesday August 24th, 2010 at 5:88 PM

DodgeNuevoLogo

A redesigned Dodge Caliber compact car is near the top of the to-do list for the new Chrysler Group LLC and its Italian partner, Fiat Auto. The replacement, which may get a new name, is expected to start sale in calendar 2011 as an early 2012 model, timing that would make it the American automaker’s first post-bankruptcy product to reach consumers.

Various sources indicate the 2012 Dodge Caliber will be built on Fiat’s C-Evo platform, a new architecture that can be varied to host a variety of “C-segment” vehicles. This means the new Caliber will compare to compact cars and crossover SUVs of the same general size as the Ford Focus and new 2011 Chevrolet Cruze. Aimed to compete with the new Audi A1 and BMW 1 Series, the platform uses 84 percent high and ultrahigh strength steel, a McPherson front and a dual-link rear suspension, both of which will use aluminum components (front and rear arms, along with the crossmember). The platform comes in around 10 percent lighter than its predecessor thanks to the use of aluminum and magnesium, and is designed to fit a transverse engine and can be adapted for either front- or all-wheel drive applications.

First Impressions: 2012 Ford Focus EV

2012 Ford Focus EV

The availability of mainstream electric vehicles (EV) is a lot closer than you realize. The Tesla Roadster (with its six-figure pricetag) and Mitsubishi i-MiEV are already being sold to the general public*. The Nissan Leaf is scheduled for a December 2010 launch and the Coda Sedan isn’t very far behind. Ford wants to be a player in the EV space and the Focus (along with the Transit Connect) are platforms being developed as pure electric vehicles.

The Ford Focus EV is based on the next-generation Ford Focus, a capable if not head-turning car. By choosing an existing platform, Ford will save the expense associated with developing a unique design. Ever since the second-generation Prius, with its iconic design, became a hit, automakers have adopted the idea that a hybrid car with an innovative high-tech drivetrain needs to scream out for attention. That’s the direction that Nissan is taking with the Nissan Leaf, due out in limited markets in late 2010. The Chevy Volt extended-range EV, the new Honda Insight, and the Lexus HS 250h are also original purpose-built designs.

North America Finally Gets the Goods With 2012 Ford Focus

Monday February 1st, 2010 at 3:22 PM

2012 Ford FocusThe Euro-spec Focus comes stateside early 2011

For many years lucky Europeans got the ‘good’ version of the Ford Focus, but starting in 2011, American car buyers will finally get to buy the real thing. The 2012 Ford Focus unveiled at this year’s North American International Auto Show is nothing like the dull econo-box we have had to deal with for years. This new car will likely be serious competition for Honda, Toyota and GM in the compact-car market segment.

Globally Ford will offer the Focus with ten different engine options. In the US, a 2.0 liter direct-injection 155-hp engine will be standard. An Ecoboost option will likely be available as well for people that are looking for a little more horsepower. Unfortunately it’s unlikely we will ever see the 1.6 liter diesel engine stateside.

To improve fuel efficiency, Ford is using its new dual-clutch, fully automatic PowerShift transmission. Ford is claiming the new transmission will improve fuel economy by 9 percent. A transmission this sophisticated is almost unheard of in this market segment and is a real surprise.
