Ford finally returns to competitiveness in the mid-size arena with the redesigned 2010 Fusion, an appealing mid-sized sedan that should make the competition more than a little nervous. The Fusion is based on the first generation Mazda 6 chassis and has luckily inherited lots of zoom-zoom from its corporate sibling. The chassis is plenty stiff and the suspension is dialed, balancing handling and ride quality like a more expensive European sports sedan.

Like most of the Ford products we’ve tested over the past year, the Fusion is solidly bolted together and was pleasantly rattle free. Interior room is excellent, with plenty of legroom for backseat passengers and a decently sized trunk. For 2010 the Fusion also received a substantial exterior makeover, with a more aggressive 3 bar chrome grill and redesigned front and rear lights. Bottom line: the new Fusion is a nice car at a nice price that should appeal to a nice portion of American car buyers.

Editor’s note: The rating number for the Chevy Malibu is misleading because it includes all the model years that were reviewed by users. The archaic system that is in place cannot just give a rating for a specific model year or generation of car. That feature will be in the next version of CarReview.
