Google Earth used in Audi's navigation system2011 Audi A8 to Feature Built-in Google Earth, Maps, and Local Search

The all-new 2011 Audi A8 incorporates more technological advances and wizardry than a Boeing 787. Highlights include an aluminum Audi Space Frame (ASF) that is 40% lighter and 25% stiffer than a comparable chassis made of steel and Audi’s pre-sense safety system for avoiding accidents and for minimizing their consequences. One technological highlight that is immediately appreciated by anyone seated in the redesigned A8 flagship is Audi’s fifth generation Multi-Media Interface (MMI) with a touchpad and navigation system, using the same embedded Google Earth application used in the iPhone and Droid, only adapted into an automotive application. This is the first time ever Google Maps has been incorporated into a car.

Not surprising, Audi and Google have teamed up to have Google Earth pre-installed into the 2011 A8. Previewed at this year’s CES, the completed system won the award for Best Embedded Telematics Navigation Product at the 2010 Telematics conference in Detroit.

Configure your Own Rolls-Royce Ghost? There is an App for That

RollsRoyce Ghost iphone appRolls-Royce’s newest promotional tool is the closest most of us will ever get to the $245,000 Ghost

If you are looking for something to spruce up your jewel encrusted iPhone, than look no further than Rolls-Royce’s new app. With this app you can customize your very own virtual Ghost. Don’t own an iPhone that is covered in priceless gems? Don’t worry this application is free, but you will quickly wonder what is the point of this app.

The application starts with a flashy video of the Ghost and it all goes downhill from there. After the video is completed, an ugly blob of what I think is the Ghost appears on the screen. The model is so poor and low definition, even by iPhone standards, that it makes the car look bad. The interior view is photo’s and looks tremendously better. R-R really should of went with just photo’s.

Portable Navigation Devices Rule Over Smartphones With GPS Apps

iPhone GPS navigation guideWith the ubiquity of GPS technology, getting lost is a thing of the past. What was once exotic military technology, can now be purchased for the price equivalent to a week’s worth of Starbucks coffee. Google now includes free GPS navigation for its smartphones and Apple’s iPhone app store is filled with hundreds of navigation applications. Even with the competition from cell phones, personal navigation devices (PND) from companies like TomTom and Garmin are here to stay.

It is great that phones now have navigation, but they will not kill-off personal navigation devices. While smartphones are increasing in popularity among the tech-savvy crowd, don’t expect PNDs to become as irrelevant as an 8-track player. PNDs have a number of advantages that no iPhone app can overcome.

One of the biggest advantages smartphones have over PNDs is cost. Using a smartphone as a GPS costs a tremendous amount of money. Google may give the GPS software away gratis, but using it is far from free. Both the Motorola Droid and iPhone 3GS are $199.99 with a two-year contract which is double the price of an entry level PND.

BBC Announces Top Gear Video Game

Top Gear Video Game
Could a great TV show about cars also be a good video game?

Video games are a $45 billion-a-year market and the BBC plans on getting into that lucrative market with a Top Gear video game. The company plans on producing a series of games based off several popular TV shows. The Top Gear video game will most likely be on the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS, since they have the largest share of the video game market. Strangely enough, some outlets are reporting that a Facebook version of the game is also a possibility.

While there is a chance a Top Gear game could be good, more than likely it’s just going to be a cheap cash-in. Television shows don’t translate well to other forms of media and especially video games.  For example, the popular ABC show Lost was a terrible video game. The game was plagued by bad voice acting and terrible game play mechanics.

SEAT's Race Game for iPhone & iPod

iPhone SEAT ibiza cupra

It’s Friday, so why not have a little fun, huh? SEAT, Volkswagen’s auto concern in Spain recently came out with this apparently nifty racing game that runs on the latest iPhone and touch-screen iPods (I say apparently cause I’m too cheap to own either yet).

The game is reminiscent of a BMW app that was floating around a short while ago, and it take advantage of the iPhone/iPods tilt sensors; tilt right and the car turns right. And the car in question is pretty interesting, especially if you like hot Euro hatchbacks. It’s SEAT’s Ibiza Cupra, that features a 180HP 1.4-liter four banger that’s get this, turbocharged AND supercharged. Tell me that doesn’t sound like fun.
