2011 Volkswagen Routan Review – Not quite a Eurovan, but better than its American counterpart

2011 Volkswagen Routan
By contributing editor David Colman

  • More utilitarian than a Swiss Army Knife
  • Better looking, better handling than a Chrysler T&C

  • AWD model would be nice
  • When is the real VW minivan coming?

My Calla Lilly white VW Routan was gaining on the similarly white Chrysler Town & Country in the adjacent freeway lane. As we both hit the same bumpy overpass, the Chrysler van bounded up and down like a porpoise at Marine World. My Routan, on the other hand, dealt with the bump like a European sportscar: one quickly snubbed upward movement followed by one quickly snubbed downward movement. In a nutshell, that routine defines the Routan and distinguishes it from the domestic sibling upon which it is based, the Chrysler Town & Country.

2012 Volkswagen Eos Lux Review – Cabriolet reborn

2012 Volkswagen Eos
By Danny Chang

  • Surprisingly fast acceleration
  • Revised styling is more sophisticated
  • Refined interior & build quality

  • Proportions are a bit awkward with the top up
  • Automatic hardtop takes patience
  • Small trunk space

The last time I even thought about a VW convertible was in high school drooling over the hot blonde cheerleader with a white ’87 Rabbit-based Cabriolet with a matching canvas top. So when my editor called about the Eos I was conflicted. It brought back some fun high school memories but I also had to decide whether I was man enough to drive a chick car. I’m glad I said yes. The Eos represents the top end of the VW convertible line-up, capping the range that will start with the new Beetle soft top and the upcoming Euro-only(for now) 2012 Golf Cabrio soft top. The new VW Eos Lux was fun to drive with the top up or down. Usually the mid-cycle model refresh is focused mostly on the innards with just minor exterior updates, but the 2012 VW Eos received a fairly significant face-lift, and it is all the better for it. Gone are the roundish headlights with the vertically-stretched chrome grille with matching round taillights, and in are the new VW corporate looks both on the front and back. The new design is more sophisticated and less cutesy than the original Eos. The 2.0 turbo four carries over mated to a 6-speed automatic with Tiptronic and Sport mode.

Automotive Icon Gets a Major 21st Century Update

Volkswagen had the glow of a proud papa announcing the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle at the New York International Auto Show today. Looking to shed its feminine demeanor, VW redesigned the Beetle with the aim at attracting a more masculine audience. Gone is the flower vase that used to occupy the center dashboard area and the cavernous roof area. The revamped version gets some exterior tweaks that lend it a more sporty and dynamic look.

Volkswagen was quoted saying that the new Beetle is “longer, wider and lower, giving a more masculine and dynamic appearance.”

Tuesday March 29th, 2011 at 12:33 PM
Posted by: aquadog

2011 Chevy CruzeWith fuel prices continually rising, 40+ mpg cars are looking like a great option for consumers who can’t afford or don’t want hybrid technology. Without breaking the bank, these affordable fuel efficient cars range from $15,000 to about $20,000 and all provide 40 mpg or more highway mpg driving. Companies that have joined the 40-mpg club are Ford, Honda, Kia, Mazda, Hyundai, Chevrolet, and Smart.

Automakers are achieving the 40 mpg mark by using lighter-weight materials, modern gasoline powered engines with direct injection and six-speed automatic transmissions along with additional fuel-saving technologies such as low-rolling-resistance tires.

2011 Volkswagen Touareg VR6 Sport Review

Wednesday March 23rd, 2011 at 10:33 AM

By Mary Ellen Ash

  • Well laid-out, high quality interior
  • Clean and uncluttered console area
  • Quiet and refined ride with sporty handling
  • Permanent All-Wheel Drive

  • Very few and relatively minor
  • A little pricey compared with other top brand models

It happened on a dark and very stormy night. I was driving through the puddle infested, super windy freeway much faster than I should have, because it felt no different than if the conditions had been ideal. While most drivers decided to stay off the roads that night, my Touareg assured me with its warm bear-like hug that everything would be okay. And isn’t that why we all want an SUV?

Volkswagen Bulli Conecpt Inspired by Original Microbus

Tuesday March 1st, 2011 at 8:33 AM
Posted by: aquadog

Volkswagen Bulli ConceptA decade after the 2001 Microbus concept, Volkswagen has announced the new reinterpreted Volkswagen Bulli concept, that follows in the footsteps of the orginal Microbus. Debuting at the Geneva Motor Show, the new Bulli has a similar shape to the Microbus with plenty of interior space and measures in at 156 inches long, 68.4 inches wide and 66 inches tall. It will include a 113-horsepower electric motor supplied with energy from a lithium-ion battery pack allowing driving ranges of up to 186.4 miles. This zero emissions vehicle can also be recharged in less than an hour.

The six-seater interior of the Bulli is reminiscent of its ancestors, in that the seat system can be transformed into a large reclining surface. The outer and middle seats of the front bench can be folded down and the rear beach can be completely stowed to increase cargo room. The Bulli will also feature a removable Apple iPad “infotainment control” that controls the stereo, navigation, and Bluetooth.

Video Review: 2011 Volkswagen Jetta SEL by Driving Sports TV

Thursday February 24th, 2011 at 8:22 AM

2011 VW Jetta review by Driving Sports TVAaron and Ryan take a look at the new 2011 Volkswagen Jetta SEL.

Volkswagen made it clear that the targets are once again the strong-selling Civic and Corolla. To entice folks considering those cars to also look at the Jetta, VW has lowered the model’s price, introduced a 115-hp base version, reduced the complexity of the options and trim levels, and grown it even further.

To reach a lower model price, the 2011 Jetta has had to make some concessions. One very obvious compromise can be seen its dashboard material. Whereas the previous car had soft-touch, nicely grained plastics that were comparable to those of the Mercedes-Benz E-class, the new model has hard plastic that wouldn’t look too out of place in a Chrysler Sebring.

All models besides the top-spec GLI return to a torsion-beam solid rear axle, and the bottom two trim levels (S and SE) have rear drum brakes instead of discs. And those are only a couple examples of the changes made to make the Jetta a more affordable car. Watch the video and find out if the cost-saving measures really cheapens the new 2011 VW Jetta.

ZL1 Camaro, Redesigned 2012 Acura TL, Audi TT RS – 2011 Chicago Auto Show

Camaro ZL1

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Minutes before the much anticipated debut of the Chevy Camaro Z28, it was all over Twitter that the car revealed would actually be a ZL1. A high performance Camaro, the aluminum hood is raised with a vented insert, rear diffusers and spoiler, and 20 inch forged aluminum wheels. Under the hood is the LSA 6.2L V8 engine with a 6-speed manual transmission. The ZL1′s power comes from a supercharged aluminum-block 6.2-liter V8 producing an estimated 550 hp.

The interior is given as much attention as the exterior design with microfiber suede inserts on heated leather seats. Unique to the ZL1 is a leather wrapped shifter and steering wheel, redesigned with the bottom of the wheel squared off and ZL1 badges. The ZL1 is still in development, though, and is projected to be available in early 2012. The ZL1 name is taken from the 1969 Camaro ZL1, which had an aluminum block 440-hp 427-cubic inch V8.

Volkswagen Golf R Arriving on American Shores in 2012

Thursday December 9th, 2010 at 8:1212 PM
Posted by: Derek

VW Golf RVW announced Thursday that the diminutive and powerful Golf R is coming to the United States in 2012. Tuned by the in-house R team at Volkswagen, the Golf R should prove more exciting than the current Clark Kent-version sold in the US.

While details like price and launch date remain unknown, Volkswagen did talk about what will separate the R model from the run-o-the-mill Golf. The Golf R gets a tuned up version of the GTI’s 2.0-liter turbo four, though Volkswagen stopped short of indicating how many horses the R will have over the GTI’s 200. In addition to more power, the Golf R gets a sport-tuned ESP, Haldex 4Motion AWD, uprated sport-tuned suspension and bigger brakes. It will only come with a manual.
