Lotus Elise, Exige & Tesla Roadster Recalled

Press and News

Lotus Exige

Uh oh, bad news for any of you out there that own a Lotus Elise, and Exige or even a Tesla Roadster (you lucky people), seems there’s a recall on. According to the NHTSA, on some Lotus Elise, Exige and Tesla Roadsters, the rear hub flange bolts that have been deemed defective. The three vehicles’ bolts may be under-torqued and could become loose, meaning suspension bits could work loose (I will not go into detail about why this would be bad, CarReview readers are brighter than that).

You’re also bright enough to already know that the all-electric Tesla Roadster is based on the Lotus Elise, hence the recall effects Cali’s finest eco sportscar as well as those two fine products from Hethel, England.

Both Lotus and Tesla issued separate notifications on the rear hub flange bolt matter. Tesla says that the recall have an effect on 345 Roadster models that were built between March 2008 and April 22, 2009, which is out of a total of 400 cars sold until May 2009. Ouch. Lotus only has to recall 27 Elise and Exige vehicles built from January 14 through May 5, 2009. Why the disparity is not clear, but it’s pretty obvious that if you’re the kind of person to go out and purchase those kinds of cars (let alone the kind of person with that kind of cash to spend), you’re going to be on top of this sort of thing and not miss it.

The recalls are slated to start sometime in June. If you’re a Tesla owner you can contact the company at 1-877-888-3752, and lucky Lotus drivers can call 1-800-245-6887.
