The following review was written by contributing editor Twain Mein.
This is a brief review of a 2007 Toyota Corolla CE. The Corolla in CE trim offers a lot of practicality and value for the money with fantastic gas mileage; claimed 32 city, 41 hwy. The 5-speed we tested was a base model that stickered at little over $15,000. For that, you get a car that offers a quiet ride, room for four, a large trunk and excellent gas mileage.
Interior: The Corolla is a fairly large car; it’s nearly as long and wide as it’s big brother Camry. There is a handy pass-through from the trunk to the rear compartment though the opening is a bit tight. Materials were good quality plastic and cloth. This was a “stripper” model and had manual windows and door locks. But the air conditioning was quite powerful. Plenty of head and leg room front and rear.
Performance: Engine has only 126 horsepower so acceleration was tepid. 5-speed was easy to shift and necessary to keep speed up, but it was difficult to find any kind of “power band”. At heavy throttle, the engine was noisy and interrupted the otherwise quite ride. Interior noise was measured 74 db (A weighted) while driving at 65 MPH. Handling was poor with lots of body roll. Styling. Corollas used to be distinctive if not downright handsome. The current generation (2003 – 2007), it’s gotten softer and more non-descript. Conclusion. For $15,000, you get a practical 4-door car that has excellent gas mileage though few amenities. With legendary Toyota reliability, it will likely last forever as well. For $15,000, you could also get some pretty tempting used cars…
