Review: 2010 BMW X6 M – Livin’ la vida loca

By Danny Chang

  • Uncompromised styling
  • Power, oh there’s so much power
  • Sticks to the pavement better than bubblegum on the sole of your shoe

  • Uncompromising styling
  • Kills the Earth slowly with its 15 average MPG
  • Most people won’t know you spent $93-large on this

I remember the days when I was an unattached, stylin’, single male. It wasn’t long ago. My Infiniti G35 S was spanking new; the 18s with low profile Pirellis and the fresh tint job matched the 280 horses with just enough style for me to say, “kick ass!” every time I got behind the wheel. Life was full of possibilities and I wasn’t doing badly with the ladies. I lived 5 minutes from the beach in San Diego and it was sunny and 80 every single day. Life was good. Now I’m married with a mortgage payment, my wife just delivered our son, and my Infiniti’s got a baby seat in the back. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, nowhere near the beach, and it’s freezing cold and overcast all the time. What’s happened to my life? So when my editor called to ask whether I wanted to test drive the BMW X6 M one gloomy Wednesday afternoon, I was, in the words of the great AC/DC, thunderstruck. I jumped at the chance, cleared my calendar, and 24 hours later, I was behind the M-badged steering wheel and scaring little kids off the streets of San Jose.

First Impressions: 2010 BMW X6 M

By Twain Mein

  • Ferocious power
  • Dynamic BMW handling
  • Merino leather seats cradle the passengers in luxurious comfort
  • Appeals to a niche market

  • Barely acceptable rear cargo space
  • Limited view looking back through hatchback window
  • Head-up display is marginally useful

BMW calls the X6 a “sports activity vehicle”, distancing itself from the dowdy “sUv” as in “utility” moniker. And this particular X6 has the vaunted “M” classification, which means “motorsport” for BMW’s racing program. But what it should stand for is “Monster”. As this X6 M is a beast, reportedly faster around the legendary Nürburgring racetrack than BMW’s own smaller and lighter M3 and even quicker in the 0-60 sprint. In fact, according to Car and Driver, the X6 M pulls 0.92 g’s in the skid pad and hits 60 in just 4.3 seconds. Truly monstrous!

Modelers have a name for it: kit-bashing. It’s when parts from different model kits are combined to make something new. That’s exactly what BMW did to create the X6. Sorta.

BMW refers to the new 2008 BMW X6 as a Sport Activity Coupé (note the accent), much as it calls the X3 and X5, despite being sport utes, Sport Activity Vehicles. Compared to the body-on-frame construction typical of SUV’s when the X5 arrived, giving the X5 its own classification just seemed like the right thing to do. Besides, BMW simply couldn’t produce anything so prosaic as an SUV. What would the world be coming to?

What the world came to is the new BMW X6.

The BMW X6 is based on the X5’s SAV platform, shares the same suspension but with a slightly wider track. BMW describes the front suspension as a “double track control arm configuration applying the double joint principle for dynamic lateral acceleration, superior tracking stability and minimization of those forces acting on the steering wheel.” That’s hard to argue with.
