We have driving shots of the newly redesigned 2010 Mazda MAZDA3 that was officially revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Mazda also tells us that the 3 will carry over its 2.0L four-cylinder, but be joined by a larger 2.5L engine to replace the current car’s 2.3L. As for the Mazda3 five-door hatchback, we’ll have to wait until some time after the L.A. Auto Show for that.

Ford Sells 20% Of Its Stake In Mazda

Monday November 24th, 2008 at 12:1111 PM
Posted by: tonyb

In an effort to raise cash and prop up its faltering balance sheets, Ford Motor Company has sold 20% of its stake in Mazda, netting the blue oval boys $540 Million. This follows on the heals of GM selling of 3% of their stake in Suzuki (netting the General $230 Million).

According to statements from both Ford and Mazda, this will not effect their ongoing joint ventures, as well as the sharing of platforms and powertrains. That makes sense for both entities. especially for Ford. what will be needed in the near future will be smaller, more fuel efficient engines, which Mazda seems to have by the boxcar load.

Ford President and CEO Alan Mulally said, This agreement allows Ford to raise capital that will help fund our product-led transformation, and at the same time, allows Ford and Mazda to continue our successful strategic relationship in the best interest of both companies. Ford will continue to focus on the Ford brand worldwide and deliver the products our customers really want and value.”

And Mazda Chairman, President and CEO Hisakazu Imaki added, “The sale of Mazda shares by our partner, Ford, will not result in any change in Mazda’s strategic direction and we will continue to accelerate our product-led brand improvement and cost innovation initiatives. We will continue our strategic relationship through our ongoing joint ventures with Ford, as well as the sharing of platforms and powertrains.”

2009 Mazda MAZDA3 S GT Sedan Review – The Renaissance Car

Tuesday October 7th, 2008 at 6:1010 AM

By Kurt Gensheimer

Blings:

  • Top-shelf interior
  • Go-kart handling
  • Terrific balance of power and fuel economy
  • Unmatched value

Dings:

  • Weak in the low-end grunt department
  • Low backseat headroom
  • No Sixth Gear?

Ruling: Power, luxury, style, sportiness, affordability, fuel efficiency, cargo room, comfort, yadda, yadda and yadda; this is the Renaissance Car of the decade.

In our lives we’ve all met people with exceptional and widely varied interests and skills. Whether it’s writing a novel, building a log cabin, flying a plane, playing in an 80′s butt-rock band, reciting the Dictionary or completing more than one Ironman triathlon, we all have friends with some unique and bizarre interests. But what if all these interests resided in one person? A person this multi-faceted is often referred to as a Renaissance Man, and often draws the respect and admiration of everyone he meets. And if there was ever a parallel car to match this beloved persona, it would be the MAZDA3 – The true Renaissance Car.

2008 Mazda CX-9

Pros:

  • VERY roomy
  • Engine pick-up is really good
  • Safe and very fun to drive (yes, both in the same sentence)
  • Big vehicle feel in a slightly smaller package
  • Not a whole lot of them on the road (yet)
  • Voice recognition system

Cons:

  • Volume control for stereo is really far away (the steering wheel one is good)
  • “Zoom, zoom” might actually get you in trouble…
  • I do actually prefer the XM® Satellite Radio over Sirius® (but I’m really searching for “cons”).
  • Voice recognition system

Pros

  • Rigid car
  • Driving dynamics
  • Driving position/seating
  • Engine is turbine-like

Cons

  • Fuel economy
  • Oil consumption
  • Small trunk and back seat
  • Low height
  • Low torque

I remember when a high school classmate got a brand new RX-7 in the mid 80’s … that was back when the BMW 320i and the Porsche 944’s were out … and have always liked the car especially the 3rd generation RX-7. Well, a lot has changed since then with updates and technology advances so I was excited to be able to drive this 40th Anniversary Edition. Having never driven a RX-7/8, I was excited to learn how a rotary felt and the driving dynamics of the RX-8. The last Mazda I drove was the phenomenal Mazdaspeed3. Thus, the bar was set high.

Driving Impressions
Mazda RX-8 40th Anniversary Emblem The gray metallic color of the car camouflages the sportiness of the car. Who would suspect a gray-colored Japanese car to perform so well; lucky for me, I never garnered any interest from the police.

Mazda RX-8 at Mazda Raceway

Sometimes you just have to let it all hang out. Sometimes you are inspired to drive the wheels off a car because you just can. And there are the times when it all comes together and you know everything is just right in the motoring universe. Such was the case when I took Mazda’s 40th Anniversary Edition RX-8 to (of all places) Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca located in Monterey, CA. Read the rest of this entry »

2008 Mazdaspeed3 Review – Mazda Go Zoom-Zoom

By Gary Chan

2008 Mazda Mazdaspeed3

Introduction
I was so excited to hear that the Mazdaspeed3 was available to test drive. I’ve always loved small agile cars and this epitomized that ideal with power to spare. The field has narrowed over the years and the Mazda is the first one in a while to bring excitement to the tarmac.

PROS

  • Powerful engine
  • Strong brakes
  • HID headlights
  • Driving ergonomics
  • Suspension (perfect for performance driving)

CONS

  • Somewhat notchy shifter
  • No remote rear hatch release
  • LCD information limited to one line and does not auto scroll
  • Suspension (a bit firm for around town driving)
