A car abandoned in a garage in Britain for half a century sold at an auction in Paris recently for euro 3.4 million — about $4.4 million in American dollars.

Everyone has probably dreamt about a situation like this one—finding an old beater sitting in a garage somewhere and learning later on that it’s worth a ton of money. It’s a gear head’s fantasy and in this case it really happened.

I have uncovered some cool vehicles over the years and embarked on restoring them on several different occasions. One of my neighbors a decade ago had an old Studebaker Power Hawk and he let me have it. I fixed it up and got it running, but had to sell it when I moved and didn’t have a garage to store it in anymore. It provided me with a fun weekend hobby for several years. But, when I met my fiancee she told me it was either her or the car. Guess who won?

Unfortunately, I’ve never had the pleasure of uncovering a gem like this one. But, then again–who has?

This car—a 1937 Bugatti 57S—is extremely rare. It would be like finding a Honus Wagner baseball card or an old Vincent Van Gogh or Picasso painting. It’s a great story and a wonderful surprise for some lucky people—especially during this tough economy
