The A4 performed much better than I expected. With only 211 horsepower to play with, I thought the car would drive, but not impress. I was impressed. The turbo really threw the car forward when I dropped the hammer, putting me back in my seat. The turbo lag had been efficiently minimized, but was still present. The A4 was best off the line, but had strong acceleration at freeway speeds, too. In fact, when cruising the highway, the car seemed to beg to go faster, handing sustained high speeds with ease and stability.
The Tiptronic transmission slipped through the eight gears so smoothly and quickly, I barely noticed when it shifted. All in all, the A4 delivers pretty impressive driving. The A4 is also loaded with all kinds of brake technology (Dual circuit, diagonal split, ABS with EBD and ESC) that can be summarized by saying it stops in a very short distance. Slamming on the brakes can get uncomfortable, but it will keep you safe in an emergency.
The A4’s handling was appropriate for a sports car- tight and controlled with very firm suspension. The A4 ate up the turns and asked for more. With four wheels powering the car and the Electronic Stability System engaged, the A4 hugs the road. Even though I drove on some rainy days, I was unable to create even the smallest slide- the tires just stayed down, rocketing the A4 out of every turn. It made for an exciting, precise and supremely confident driving experience. A small turning radius enabled a u-turn on about any street.
Audi’s styling has been second to none lately, with clean, bold lines and a minimalist touch. The A4 continues that tradition, but picks up a bit of edginess that seems to reflect some of the recent BMW flair. The LED DRLs remain an aggressive and singular Audi touch. Overall, the A4 comes off elegant and powerful, balancing old world grace and next generation technology. It’s beautiful, but loses some of the uniqueness of former Audi design ethic.
An Attractive Luxury Sedan From All Angles
The Audi A4 quattro is a beautiful sedan that will be on the short list when I buy a luxury sport car. Offering all the luxuries, the A4 also delivers the goods when it comes to driving excitement. It costs less than a BMW 3 series when similarly equipped, yet offers a similar driving experience. (When I checked out the 328i web page, BMW actively compares itself to the Audi A4, so the similarities have been noticed by others!) Compared to the Acura TL, it costs a bit more, but offers more precise handling. The Infiniti G37 packs a lot more horsepower, but offers a much smaller trunk and rear seat. In all, the Audi A4 quattro delivers a compelling balance of features, performance and price.
