2009 MINI Cooper S

Styling
The Cooper styling is unique with a stubby nose and contrasting white roof. I drove one in bumble bee yellow, complete with black racing stripes on the hood, which I quite enjoyed. As evidenced by the small air scoop in the hood, Cooper S styling is all about fun with a splash of sporty.

One big styling plus that MINI offers its customers are individualization. While other brands have their customers driving the same few colors of their cars, the MINI Cooper brand enables and encourages customization. On their web site, they offer a dizzying array of optional markings including stripes of all colors (and patterns), badges, panels, limited editions, roof graphics and completely custom designs. With so much variety, it almost guarantees that a customer can design their own unique version of the MINI, creating a much more personal bond to their car. And with the unique body styling, every MINI will be instantly recognized as a MINI no matter what color or design is plastered on it. All in all, it raises the level of fun (and/or sportiness) of an already not-too-serious car.

Value
While the Cooper S comes in on the high side of small car pricing, it does justify the cost. With solid construction, good quality materials, thoughtful design and a peppy drive, the Cooper S does deliver the goods as a fun car to own. More importantly, the Cooper S ties back to the long tradition of the MINI brand as both a widely popular economy car and a surprisingly successful rally competitor. Owning a Cooper S ties into that history and completely updates it with modern design and enhanced performance. With the individualized styling offered, the MINI offers a rare, personalized car ownership experience that is virtually unheard of from the major brands. It is really difficult to compare the Cooper S to a Mazdaspeed3, Toyota Matrix, or Honda Civic Si. While all are small cars in the same price range, the Cooper S offers a unique ownership experience that does not lend itself to easy comparison.

Conclusion
The MINI Cooper S offers a fun and zippy driving experience and an opportunity to own a truly unique automobile. I thoroughly enjoyed my days with my test car, not so much for the handling or performance, but for the time spent with a well-designed and executed updated classic. Quite simply, I enjoyed being in a MINI. For many drivers, the two-seat capacity and small storage relegate a Cooper S to be a secondary or commuter car- fun to own but only meets a limited set of needs. I for one wish I had room in my garage for an extra car like the Cooper S.
