Top Gear USAThe world’s most popular car-related TV show, produced in the U.K., is Top Gear. Lately, BBC America has been showing more reruns of Top Gear from past seasons and fewer new episodes from the 2010 season. Maybe they are holding back because the History Channel will begin airing a U.S. version of Top Gear. As we anxiously await, today the History Channel gives us a preview of what to expect from the team, and so far, it looks pretty good.

The visual style will be familiar to anyone that’s seen the original U.K.-version, though the tone and demeanor of hosts Adam Ferrara, Tanner Foust and Rutledge Wood are all-American. In this teaser clip, each host gets hold of their favorite Lamborghini and try to convince each other that theirs is the baddest bull of them all.

top gear usaAfter two failed starts, a U.S. version of Top Gear is finally happening.

Top Gear has been a smash hit in the UK, but a U.S. version is has had trouble getting off the line. Since 2007, the BBC has attempted to create an American Top Gear, but has went through two different revisions of hosts. Finally, the cast has been finalized and the History Channel has announced that they have picked up ten episodes of the show.

The current cast is “funnyman” Rutledge Wood, actor Adam Ferrara and professional driver Tanner Foust. The identity of the American Stig is a mystery and likely classified under the Department of Homeland Security. Can the three U.S. hosts match the charisma and humor that Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May have? One celebrity fears that an American Top Gear might not work.

Top Gear Video Game
Could a great TV show about cars also be a good video game?

Video games are a $45 billion-a-year market and the BBC plans on getting into that lucrative market with a Top Gear video game. The company plans on producing a series of games based off several popular TV shows. The Top Gear video game will most likely be on the Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS, since they have the largest share of the video game market. Strangely enough, some outlets are reporting that a Facebook version of the game is also a possibility.

While there is a chance a Top Gear game could be good, more than likely it’s just going to be a cheap cash-in. Television shows don’t translate well to other forms of media and especially video games.  For example, the popular ABC show Lost was a terrible video game. The game was plagued by bad voice acting and terrible game play mechanics.

Top Gear goes for a ride with Ken Block

James May (Top Gear) visits Ken Block

Ken Block has achieved Internet fame with his gymkhana drifting practice videos. For guys (and gals) who aren’t afraid of having a little grease embedded in their fingerprints, Ken Block’s videos are simply visual artistry in motion.

Well, it seems that the producers at Top Gear were impressed with Ken’s skills and promptly send James May across the pond to the U.S. for a lesson in drifting – Ken Block style. Unless you’ve been camping out in Outer Mongolia or are still using a 56k dial-up Internet connection, you’ve probably seen Ken Block’s gymkhana practice video. As an added bonus, Ricky Carmichael (10 time motocross champion) literally jumps in and “BAM!”, kicks it up a notch Emeril-style.
