2011 BMW 1-Series M
By Ming Tan

Pros

  • M heritage
  • Powerful and smooth revving 3.0 liter Twinpower Turbo inline 6
  • Unmistakable styling with an aggressive edge

Cons

  • Rubbery shifter diminishes that precise feel of the car
  • Minor exhaust drone
  • Some minor body aesthetic details

I love BMW M cars. I’ve fancied all the generations of M3’s over the years, of course starting with the E30 back in the late 80’s. I love the uniqueness that these special cars bring to the table. I love the double take that I often have to give to these cars when they drive by. And admittedly, I love the hype that builds every time a new M car is due to be released. It’s always interesting to experience the launching of a new BMW. But for car enthusiasts, we always wait to see when the M version will be coming.

2012 BMW 6 Series Coupe

New photos of the 3rd generation 2012 BMW  6 Series Coupe have been released. The BMW 6 Series Coupé features a sweeping coupé roofline while the long hood, short over-hangs, set-back passenger compartment with Hofmeister kink, long wheelbase and flat waistline embody the typical proportions of a BMW coupé more than any other model. Its now traditional BMW “shark nose”, with a large, forward-slanted BMW kidney grille, broad air intakes, wide, contoured bonnet and muscular wheel arches, allude to the powerful engine beneath. Inspired by the movement of water, the fluid lines of the car combine with the subtly curved surfaces to create a look of athletic elegance, which together with the 74mm increase in length and 5mm lower height creates a powerful stance.

Two BMW turbocharged engines, a newly developed chassis and a host of class-leading driver assistance technology ensure that the new BMW 6 Series Coupé is full of substance, while interior space and comfort have been enhanced.

Likes:

  • Drop Dead Gorgeous Inside and Out
  • More interior space for occupants

Dislikes:

  • Unpredictable Handling at the Limit

BMW has reintroduced the 650i as a 2012 model after a short break in production. Although the coupe will be available shortly, the first version offered is the convertible, which retails for a healthy base price of $90,500. When you add in the slew of options that equipped our test car, the retail price soars to more than $105,000. If you’re looking for beauty and exclusivity, then the revamped 650i is worth the price of admission. But if sports car performance is your aim, then you may want to look elsewhere for your ride.

2011 BMW M3 Coupe Review

2011 BMW M3

Pros:

  • Smooth lines, appeals to the female eye
  • Bavarian Corvette in four seat clothing
  • Anti-bling, subtle cues says this one means business

Cons:

  • Thirsty
  • Uninspired interior
  • Bit of a Heavyweight

The BMW M3 has long been the benchmark for luxury sports cars. From the original E30 M3, which was created to homologate the M3 for Group A Touring Car racing, to the wildly successful E36 M3, offered in both sedan and coupe styles, to the E46 M3 with its screaming inline 6 and SMG (semi-manual) transmission, nothing else has offered such a sublime marriage of ultimate performance with luxury and daily driveability.

BMW “Don’t Txt & Drive” Ad Campaign

Monday June 6th, 2011 at 12:66 PM

BMW is launching their “Don’t Txt & Drive” national advertising campaign of tv, print, online and radio messages designed to raise awareness and show the consequences of distracted driving. The campaign theme of “Don’t Txt & Drive – When the Engine Starts the Texting Stops” will illustrate different situations of careless parents endangering their children with distracted driving and will run from June throughout the year.

The U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood states that, “Distracted driving is an epidemic in America, and it has deadly consequences for thousands of people on our roads each year”. The U.S. Department of Transportation also provides shocking statistics that nearly 5500 people died in car accidents in 2009  involving distracted drivers, while the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that nearly 87 percent of teens admit they text while driving. All of this has prompted BMW to become involved in this campagin of urging drivers to put down their phones and focus on the road. Jim O’Donnell, CEO of BMW of North America states, “We developed this campaign to be impactful in hopes of evoking emotion and conveying the serious dangers of distracted driving and its potential consequences.” In efforts to reach out to teens, the “Don’t Txt & Drive” message will also be incorporated in more than 100 teen driving schools across the United States.

Pros:

  • Tight & confident handling
  • Decent acceleration
  • Refined interior & build quality

Cons:

  • Styling is a step back in time
  • 8-speed automatic is too shift-happy
  • Lacks personality

The second generation BMW X3 is almost the size of the first generation X5. BMW has added to the overall length, width and height, as well as a tiny bit to the wheelbase. The benefits are rear passenger legroom, headroom for all passengers and cargo room. Despite its bigger size, the second generation X3 still reminds you of the original, smaller X3, at least from the front. From the back, the new X3 resembles the new designs of the X5 and X6.

2012 BMW 6-Series CoupeBMW has announced the newest addition to their lineup, the third-generation 2012 6-Series 650i Coupe, set to go on sale this fall in the U.S.

The 2012 650i Coupe follows the launch this spring of the new 2012 650i Convertible

BMW’s new 6-Series coupe will feature a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8, 400-horsepower engine, 450 lb-ft of torque, an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters with an optional 6-speed manual transmission, a top speed of 155 mph and a 0-60 time of 4.8 seconds.

Still highly recognizable as a 6-Series coupe, the look of the new car is at once more sleek and smoother than the car it replaces. About 1.5 inches wider and 3 inches longer with a wheelbase of 112.4 inches, the new 6-Series coupe is a larger, roomier car than its predecessor, but features aluminum doors and hood, with the trunk, front fenders, and roof being constructed of reinforced composite to reduce the overall weight.

Video Review: 2011 BMW 135i vs. Modded 2009 BMW 135i

Friday February 25th, 2011 at 8:22 AM

2011 BMW 135 vs 2009 BMW 135The Driving Sports team comes together to test how a modified 2009 BMW 135i stacks up against a brand new 2011 model. Can the N55 twin-scroll single turbo outperform a N54 twin turbo?

The BMW 1-Series began its life back in 2004 when the 3-Series was moving up in the world and BMW needed another small family car to serve as an entry model. It started off as a 5-door hatchback, but was introduced as a 2-door coupe, a 3-door hatchback, and a convertible in 2007.

The current engine selection consists of a 3.0L I-6 producing 230hp and 200 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.0L twin turbo I-6 producing 300hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.

The M Performance exhaust system is made of Inconel, a lightweight, heat-resistant, and corrosion resistant chrome-nickel alloy, that will produce a more powerful sound due to the flow-optimized exhaust which will reduce overall back pressure.
