2010 Lincoln MKT Review – Lincoln finds the sweet spot for luxury crossovers

Performance and Handling

Even with the standard 3.7 liter six and front wheel drive, power was perfectly adequate. On the freeway, the six speed manual was well matched to the torque curve and it moved from 60-80 mph with plenty of power, unlike the Buick Enclave which loses steam at 70 mph. Though the front wheel drive and all-weather Hankook tires conspired to illicit tire squeal, it wasn’t too intrusive. Paddle shifters are available for increased driver involvement but they were a bit counter-intuitive.

The ride was very impressive; quiet and extremely well damped with surprisingly little body roll. I particularly liked the incredibly bright HID headlights which turn in the same direction as you turn the steering wheel.

Styling

Imagine a humpbacked whale upside down with its raked throat coming at you and you’ve got a pretty good idea of what the grill looks like-big, intimidating, and distinctive–though not necessarily beautiful. The sides are attractive but the huge rear-end with its gigantic lift gate are a bit jarring. Still, neighbors commented “Oooh, what’s that? Looks fancy!” At least controversy breeds interest.

Since the MKT offers a lot of premium features as standard, an exact apples-to-apples comparison is hard to do. Space-wise, despite being the longest of the six in the comparison, it comes up about mid pack with respect to passenger volume, but best-in-class for second row rear leg room. Its gas mileage is better than average for such a large automobile and its handling dynamics are only outpaced by the Acura MDX and Audi Q7. Styling-wise and positioning, I believe the Buick Enclave and Cadillac SRX are the real targets for the MKT. Though the Buick has more classic styling, the Lincoln MKT has a much better power plant and far nicer interior. Overall, it’s a distinctively designed car that offers a great ride, hushed interior and practical features to suit the growing families.

Conclusion

If I was looking to buy a practical yet luxurious vehicle to haul two adults and two kids with all the gear that goes with the lifestyle, the Lincoln MKT is a compelling choice. It offers a lot of refinement and luxury while still being versatile and practical. The outstanding sound system, quiet ride, and plush interior would keep me happy for years to come. The biggest complaint is the iPhone compatibility”. Other than that, it was nicely executed.
