2011 Volkswagen Touareg VR6 Sport Review

By Mary Ellen Ash

Yays:

  • Well laid-out, high quality interior
  • Clean and uncluttered console area
  • Quiet and refined ride with sporty handling
  • Permanent All-Wheel Drive

Nays:

  • Very few and relatively minor
  • A little pricey compared with other top brand models

It happened on a dark and very stormy night. I was driving through the puddle infested, super windy freeway much faster than I should have, because it felt no different than if the conditions had been ideal. While most drivers decided to stay off the roads that night, my Touareg assured me with its warm bear-like hug that everything would be okay. And isn’t that why we all want an SUV?

Volkswagen Bulli Conecpt Inspired by Original Microbus

Tuesday March 1st, 2011 at 8:33 AM

Volkswagen Bulli ConceptA decade after the 2001 Microbus concept, Volkswagen has announced the new reinterpreted Volkswagen Bulli concept, that follows in the footsteps of the orginal Microbus. Debuting at the Geneva Motor Show, the new Bulli has a similar shape to the Microbus with plenty of interior space and measures in at 156 inches long, 68.4 inches wide and 66 inches tall. It will include a 113-horsepower electric motor supplied with energy from a lithium-ion battery pack allowing driving ranges of up to 186.4 miles. This zero emissions vehicle can also be recharged in less than an hour.

The six-seater interior of the Bulli is reminiscent of its ancestors, in that the seat system can be transformed into a large reclining surface. The outer and middle seats of the front bench can be folded down and the rear beach can be completely stowed to increase cargo room. The Bulli will also feature a removable Apple iPad “infotainment control” that controls the stereo, navigation, and Bluetooth.

Video Review: 2011 Volkswagen Jetta SEL by Driving Sports TV

Thursday February 24th, 2011 at 8:22 AM

2011 VW Jetta review by Driving Sports TVAaron and Ryan take a look at the new 2011 Volkswagen Jetta SEL.

Volkswagen made it clear that the targets are once again the strong-selling Civic and Corolla. To entice folks considering those cars to also look at the Jetta, VW has lowered the model’s price, introduced a 115-hp base version, reduced the complexity of the options and trim levels, and grown it even further.

To reach a lower model price, the 2011 Jetta has had to make some concessions. One very obvious compromise can be seen its dashboard material. Whereas the previous car had soft-touch, nicely grained plastics that were comparable to those of the Mercedes-Benz E-class, the new model has hard plastic that wouldn’t look too out of place in a Chrysler Sebring.

All models besides the top-spec GLI return to a torsion-beam solid rear axle, and the bottom two trim levels (S and SE) have rear drum brakes instead of discs. And those are only a couple examples of the changes made to make the Jetta a more affordable car. Watch the video and find out if the cost-saving measures really cheapens the new 2011 VW Jetta.

ZL1 Camaro, Redesigned 2012 Acura TL, Audi TT RS – 2011 Chicago Auto Show

Camaro ZL1

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Minutes before the much anticipated debut of the Chevy Camaro Z28, it was all over Twitter that the car revealed would actually be a ZL1. A high performance Camaro, the aluminum hood is raised with a vented insert, rear diffusers and spoiler, and 20 inch forged aluminum wheels. Under the hood is the LSA 6.2L V8 engine with a 6-speed manual transmission. The ZL1′s power comes from a supercharged aluminum-block 6.2-liter V8 producing an estimated 550 hp.

The interior is given as much attention as the exterior design with microfiber suede inserts on heated leather seats. Unique to the ZL1 is a leather wrapped shifter and steering wheel, redesigned with the bottom of the wheel squared off and ZL1 badges. The ZL1 is still in development, though, and is projected to be available in early 2012. The ZL1 name is taken from the 1969 Camaro ZL1, which had an aluminum block 440-hp 427-cubic inch V8.

2010 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Edition Review – V-dub's cup runneth over

By Derek Mau

Props to Volkswagen for trying to inject some fun into a family sedan that would otherwise be more associated with the sober, button-down demeanor of a desk-jockey commuter locked into a 9 -5 job with no hope for advancement beyond his cubicle walls with the neutral tone fabric. Take one tidy sedan powered by a very frugal turbo-diesel and DSG gearbox, dial-in the suspension from the more sporty GLI, dress it up with an aero kit and a shiny set of 18 inch alloy wheels, and the excitement dial gets turned up a couple of notches. Just how exciting is the Jetta TDI Cup Edition? I take the  working man’s coach to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey and push it through the turns to find out if getting 40 mpg and having fun at the same time is possible.

The engine remains standard: It’s VW’s 140-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter TDI clean diesel four, mated to either a six-speed manual or the undeniably high-tech six-speed direct-shift gearbox automatic. No powertrain changes between the standard Jetta TDI and the Jetta TDI Cup Edition, but it does get a bigger set of binders in addition to the performance mods mentioned above.

Likes:

  • Interior space (especially back seat)
  • Highly intuitive touchscreen interface for stereo/satellite radio/navigation
  • Rear end looks more luxurious than flat rear of previous generation
  • Ergonomic positioning of driver controls (signals, cruise, sound, etc)

Dislikes:

  • Lack of power at lower rpm’s
  • Center arm rest is too far back and angled downward to be functional/comfortable
  • Phone connectivity non-intuitive and non-functional (in my case)
  • Noisy fan at highest setting

The People’s Car
Volkswagen has been in the United States since the 1950’s, and has grown to be one of the largest manufacturers in the world. With the sixth-generation Jetta that is now less expensive, lighter and larger (almost 3” in length) than the previous version, VW is targeting buyers of the Civic and Corolla with the base price of the Jetta S at $16,755. Incidentally, the base is almost $1k less than the 2010 Jetta S. The model I drove was the Jetta SEL which starts at just over $22,000. With the in-laws in town, I was eager to test out the new Jetta over a few days.

2010 Volkswagen GTI Review

Thursday July 8th, 2010 at 3:77 PM
Posted by: Francois

By Francis Cebedo

Strengths:

  • Balance and poise are delivered in this package
  • Interior design and quality are top notch
  • Value. while it is not cheap, it delivers a lot of the money
  • Mileage is impressive when driven conservatively
  • Terrific DSG transmission. It is fuel efficient and responsive
  • Styling is thoroughly refined and modern yet it carries on the Golf lineage
  • Dynaudio stereo system is A+
  • Driveability and fun factor is sky high

Weaknesses:

  • Can be outgunned in a horsepower fight
  • Heavy, unattractive and dated wheels
  • Bluetooth needs voice dial
  • iPod integration needs to be quicker, especially when there is a big song library

Balance and harmony are coveted words in automobiles. The 2010 Volkswagen GTI achieves both with authority. This car makes no attempt to entice you with high performance specs or flashy spoilers and hood scoops. Rather, it will capture your driving soul with a unit that drives extremely well. It will take you to work and invite you to take the scenic mountain route on occasion. The GTI will give you great mileage, yet push you to the back of the seat when called upon. It will deliver great value for your dollar, yet spoil you with an interior that defies its price category.
