2009 Toyota 4Runner

Pros

  • Better fuel economy than most V6 engines in its class
  • Comfortable ride and responsive handling makes you forget that you’re driving a truck
  • Intelligent shift patterns from the 5-speed gearbox account for smooth performance

Cons

  • Interior is overdue for a makeover
  • Third rowing seating suitable only for munchkins, yoga masters, or inflicting torture upon backseat drivers who need a timeout

2008 Porsche Cayenne Review – Medium bodied, well balanced, and silky on the palate

2008 Porsche Cayenne
Photographs and review by Derek Mau

Pros

  • A brawny V8 provides über amounts of torque
  • Traction that’s better than super-glue
  • Big brakes take away speed faster than your can Labrador woof down a bowl of mac-cheese
  • A lot tougher than it looks
  • Porsche Active Suspension Mechanism (PASM) and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDDC), combined, work harder than James Brown at the Apollo.

Cons

  • The Bose audio system is so weak that the engine and exhaust note sounds better when singing at high revs
  • Drinks more gas than Ludwig at Octoberfest

Verdict: The Cayenne is the anti-thesis to Miles Crane when it comes to power, refinement, and the ability to get dirty with the other off-roaders in the neighborhood.

By John G.

Up:

  • Solid, Germanic look and feel. You’re definitely driving a BMW
  • Sticks to the road like…something very sticky
  • Strong engine
  • Well-appointed interior

Down:

  • Harsh ride
  • Laggy automatic transmission
  • Nav system clunky, outdated
  • Expensive

Sideways

  • Feels like a much larger vehicle than it is

  • Really impressive (and decent) acceleration at speed
  • Mileage, mileage, mileage
  • Didn’t have to open the entire tailgate to get into the back of the vehicle
  • Continuously variable transmission
  • XM Satellite Radio and built-in Bluetooth

Cons:

  • Ack, the grill – not my thing
  • Engine takes an inordinate amount of time to reach “idle” after starting the car
  • The seats were pretty flimsy

2008 Nissan Rogue
By Alex Kramer

Pros:

  • Gutsy 4-cylinder engine
  • Confident handling
  • Sleek, bold exterior style
  • Excellent value

Cons:

  • Yo-yo for a transmission
  • Less than spacious interior
  • Poor rearward visibility

Small SUVs have become one of the fastest growing segments of the car industry, selling over 300,000 units last year. With gas at over $3 a gallon, it’s no wonder people are looking for cars that offer increased cargo room and all weather capability, yet don’t suffer much when it comes to fuel efficiency. The only surprising thing is that some of the major car companies still don’t offer a model to compete in this lucrative niche. For Nissan, that finally changes this year with the introduction of the all-new Rogue, a crossover SUV that seats 5 and offers optional all-wheel drive. Fortunately, the Rogue lives up to its name and should steal some thunder away from the competition. Read the rest of this entry »
