2011 Nissan 370Z
By Dan Tsuchiya

Pros:

  • Great improvement over the successful 350Z
  • Nice body lines, Rays wheels are icing on the cake
  • Powerful motor with great sound
  • GTR influence

Cons:

  • Manual transmission not as slick as the competition
  • No lumbar support or telescoping steering wheel
  • Either less weight or more power and this could be an exotic challenger for a fraction of the cost

41 years ago Nissan (Datsun in the US) launched the 240Z onto our shores and turned the sports car market on its head. Here was a light, nimble, reliable, value oriented sports coupe for two which had decent cargo capacity. I had the pleasure of owning and wrenching on various Z cars through the 300ZX and still found the 240Z to be the purist of them all. Only when Nissan introduced the 350Z in 2003 did it appear that they had something of real value that could match their original Z sports car.

We’ve have been eagerly anticipating the arrival of the Hyundai Veloster since it was announced at the NAIAS in Detroit earlier this year. Our friends at Driving Sports TV were invited to the launch event and posted a video review of the 2012 Veloster which features a 1.6-liter, GDI 4-cylinder, 138-horsepower engine and a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The interior design, inspired by sport bikes, adds to the Veloster’s unique flair. Additionally, the Veloster’s sleek and lightweight design, and direct-injected engine give it an extremely efficient estimated highway 40-mpg.

2011 BMW M3 Coupe Review

2011 BMW M3

Pros:

  • Smooth lines, appeals to the female eye
  • Bavarian Corvette in four seat clothing
  • Anti-bling, subtle cues says this one means business

Cons:

  • Thirsty
  • Uninspired interior
  • Bit of a Heavyweight

The BMW M3 has long been the benchmark for luxury sports cars. From the original E30 M3, which was created to homologate the M3 for Group A Touring Car racing, to the wildly successful E36 M3, offered in both sedan and coupe styles, to the E46 M3 with its screaming inline 6 and SMG (semi-manual) transmission, nothing else has offered such a sublime marriage of ultimate performance with luxury and daily driveability.

Spy shot of next gen "991" Porsche 911

The next generation Porsche 911, internally known as project 991, isn’t set to be officially shown until September at the Frankfurt Auto Show this year. Spy shots have been posted on such sites as autospies.com and WordCarFans. Now a video from Porsche has been released on their YouTube channel.

Clear differences between the new model and the current 997 are the more upright headlights, a slightly longer body, and the side mirrors are now positioned at the side of the doors and not at the window.

Other new features for the new 911 will include extensive use of lightweight carbon materials and active aerodynamics–surfaces that react to what the car is doing, and how fast it’s doing it. Expect adjustable front and rear spoilers, dynamically opening and closing air intakes and an automatic rear wing.

Video of Nissan Esflow EV Sports Car Concept – The Sports Car of the Future?

Monday February 14th, 2011 at 2:22 PM
Posted by: aquadog

Nissan Esflow EV Sports Car ConceptNissan will unveil the new electric Esflow EV sports car concept at next month’s Geneva Motor Show, to demonstrate how a sports car of the future might look.

Nissan’s Esflow is based on the technology from their first practical Zero Emission car, the Nissan Leaf; however, the powertrain is tuned to offer a more sporty driving experience with rear-wheel drive and two motors. The two electric motors are positioned above the axis of the rear wheels to control the left and right wheels independently, producing optimized torque (60mph/100kph in under 5 seconds), vehicle stability, and efficient power regeneration. Like the Leaf, the motors will be powered by laminated lithium-ion battery packs, but will be situated low along the axis of the front and rear wheels, to help out the center of gravity, allowing the Esflow to travel over 150 miles (240km) on one charge.

2011 Chevrolet Corvette ZO6 Review – So fast it should come with its own racetrack

Tuesday December 21st, 2010 at 8:1212 AM
Posted by: AKramer

By Alex Kramer

Pros:

  • If 505 hp isn’t enough for you, seek help
  • With tires as wide as oil drums, lateral grip is abundant
  • Hit them hard and the carbon-ceramic brakes will stand the car on its nose
  • Surprisingly decent fuel efficiency for such a big engine
  • Iconic exterior design definitely looks the part of an all-out sports car

Cons:

  • Suspension gets unsettled over rough pavement
  • Embarrassing interior for a $100k car
  • Requires a racetrack to fully explore the performance potential

Sometimes the weather can be cruel. Very cruel. Especially when you are scheduled to test one of the fastest production cars available for under $100k and the forecast calls for lots of rain and cold temperatures. Sure, rolling up to the multiplex in a car that can run with Ferraris and Lamborghinis is kinda cool, but oh what would we have given for some nicer testing conditions.

The car in question is the 2011 Chevrolet Corvette ZO6. With a 505 hp 7.0 L V8 engine, a sub 4 second 0-60 time, and a sticker price starting around $70k, the ZO6 has offered supercar levels of performance at a budget price since 2006. Although now eclipsed by the Corvette ZR1, which was reborn in 2009 with a supercharged engine making an astounding 638 hp, the ZO6 is still one of the fastest machines on the road today, especially for the money.

Porsche Boxster RS 60 Spyder Review – First in its class

Thursday July 31st, 2008 at 10:77 AM

Porsche Boxster RS 60 Spyder
Review and photos by Derek Mau

Pros:

  • Superb handling and excellent steering feel
  • Power to weight ratio of a true sports car
  • Top-notch gearbox
  • High quality interior

Cons:

  • Headroom not friendly to taller occupants with the top up
  • Road noise may too intrusive to some
  • Limited cargo space forces you to travel very light

Settling for second place has never been Porsche’s mind set. Porsche has a long list of podium finishes on and off of the racing circuit. In 1948 Porsche scored a first place finish at Innsbruck Stadtrennen with the 356, the first sports car to bear the Porsche name, only one month after it was road certified. Fast forward to 1984 for another notable first – Porsche, with the 911 Carrera 4×4, marks its first victory in the Paris–Dakar Rally. At Porsche safety is just as important as winning races. Porsche becomes the first car maker in Germany to equip all production models with an airbag for driver and front passenger as standard equipment. Now it seems that Porsche has taken the gold again in the form of a limited edition GT Silver Metallic Boxster, the RS 60 Spyder.

I was given the opportunity to test drive the RS 60 Spyder at the home of Porsche’s Sport Driving School (PSDS), Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama. In my opinion, the race track is the best place to put the RS 60 through its paces without scaring the natives on public roads. As an added bonus, I had legendary racer and lead PSDS instructor, Hurley Haywood, show me the race line at Barber Motorsports Park.
