Honda Shows FC Sport Concept at LA Show

Well this is a surprise. Honda showed off a very interesting hydrogen powered sports car at the Los Angeles Auto Show this year.

Dubbed the FC Sport, the blunt little ride was made to show off the packaging flexibility that is possible with hydrogen fuel cells. Ah, hydrogen fuel cells, the darlings of the seriously geeky eco-minded designers. Sure, makes a lot of sense, 99% off all the stuff in the universe in hydrogen, so using it for fuel seems like a no-brainer (apart from that whole infrastucture thing … oh, and the Hindenburg-esque consequences).

Anyway, the FC Sport uses a V-Flow fuel cell stack and electric drivetrain from the FCX Clarity (Honda’s other hydrogen fueled show car). In the FC Sport, the stack and drive system are moved to the back of the car for a mid-engined layout. Also , the FC Sport is a three-seat sports car, sort of similar to that of the McLaren F1 supercar. The driver is front and center and the two passengers set back on either side.

The FC Sport is strictly a non-functional styling concept, which is unfortunate, because styling-wise, it seems half thought out.

But the overall idea, a fuel cell sports car, is one Honda should pursue further.

Nissan Goes Cube Crazy!

Friday November 21st, 2008 at 9:1111 AM

By Harmon Leon

With bells and whistles, this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show, Nissan introduced the 2009 Cube. Don’t be deceived by what looks like a refrigerator on wheels, the Cube has the same 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine found in the Nissan Versa, and is good for 122 HP and 127 lb-ft of torque.

Nissan first introduced the original Cube to Japan back in 1998. Judging how it went over, the ’98 Cube was perhaps a car way ahead of its time. But now with its funky style and affordable cost, the Cube could catch on Stateside with the Magna comic crowd and become a very fashionable vehicle with its Jacuzzi Curve layout and floating meter pod driver’s area. Like Godzilla, the Cube has already taken Tokyo by storm through massive exposure in trendy magazines, videos and smattering across the Web.

L.A. Auto Show – GM:More carpet than cars, Nissan 370Z: More bang for your buck

Nissan 370Z headlightBy Adrienne Gruben

Today marked the first of two press days at the Los Angeles Auto Show before it opens to the public this weekend. And as much as it was defined by what was there, including the Nissan 370Z and the unveiling of the Mini E, what wasn’t there was equally striking. While Ford and Chrysler were in what seemed like business as usual mode (albeit more subdued), GM’s public relations presence was more…an absence.

There was no press conference. And in their section, there was much more carpet than cars. I guess they could cross market with carpet manufacturers the way Tide advertises with clothing from Ann Taylor loft. Maybe it left more space for the elephant in the room. Even the Hummer was hidden off to the side – possibly a timeout?

Here’s the straight poop on what’s happening at the Los Angeles Auto Show…

2010 Mazda MAZDA3

Since its release nearly five years ago, the MAZDA3 has become a global best-seller due to its incredible balance of sportiness, practicality, fuel efficiency and affordability. In fact, one in every three cars Mazda sells worldwide is a MAZDA3. With the 2010 MAZDA3, Mazda yet again expects to raise the standard of what “economy” cars can deliver with more refined ride quality, a more luxurious-yet-sporty interior, attractive exterior styling resembling the RX-8, improved luggage space and new safety features. In addition, the MAZDA3 will offer new features like dual zone climate control, 8-way power seats, push button start and Bluetooth phone and audio; items not normally optioned in an economy car. The 2010 MAZDA3 will carry over the first-gen 2.0L four-cylinder, but will offer a new 2.5L with the company’s innovative new Start Stop technology that should put out between 175-185 horsepower and deliver up to 33 mpg.

2009 Nissan CubeNot everything can be as sexy or curvaceous as the Nissan 370Z. On the opposite end of the car spectrum is the new Nissan Cube being promoted heavily at the Los Angeles Auto show this week. Taking a closer look, the Cube really has some nice design cues inside and outside. For something shaped like a shoebox, the Cube has a lot of curves. Below are photos of the new Cube from the floor of the L.A. Auto Show.

The first generation Cube was introduced and sold to Japan’s customers in 1998. The 2009 model is the third generation of the Cube’s evolution and will be available to the U.S. and Canada in the spring of 2009. The unique design features an asymmetrical body, a stout “bulldog-like” stance, wide doors, a large greenhouse with wraparound rear window, and a refrigerator-style rear door.

Nissan CEO: Save Cash and invest in Sustainable Mobility AKA Electric Cars

By Kurt Gensheimer

The start of Press Days at the LA Auto Show found Nissan/Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn addressing a throng of media folk. He started predictably, recapping the woes we’ve heard on TV, radio, print, web, street corners, barber shops and smoke signal – the economy is in the crapper and job number one for car companies should be to conserve cash. Strip the bathrooms of TP, take away free coffee, whatever it takes, save cash and ride out the current financial storm, with one caveat – don’t stifle innovation and technology. Because once the turnaround happens, you don’t want to be caught still ripping Cottonelle out of the crappers.

The far more encouraging segment of Ghosn’s keynote was his piece about the future of electric vehicles, Read the rest of this entry »
