  • Super performance value for modest outlay
  • Spacious enough to haul 4 adults or camping gear for the weekend
  • Handsome interior accoutrement
  • First class sport seats
  • Wider track, wider wheels mean greater stability

  • Thirsty 4-cylinder engine
  • Would be so much better with a dual-clutch automatic transmission
  • Styling heavy handed
  • Hood scoop needs to disappear
  • Buy this one and you’ll have STI (305hp) envy

The latest incarnation of the Impreza WRX makes so much sense on so many levels that it’s hard to believe you only need to shell out $28,995 to buy the leather-shod Limited model. For skiers and outdoor adventurers, the new wide-body 5-door hatchback provides enough room to haul four adults anywhere in comfort. If you find yourself mired in snow, the Impreza’s continuous all-wheel-drive will outsmart drifts by apportioning up to 100 percent of available traction either fore or aft thanks to a viscous coupling, locking center differential.

In late 2006, my son entered his freshman year at the University of Michigan. He went there carless, but we decided he should have wheels after his first semester. We set a price limit of $15000, decided to buy new rather than used, and narrowed our choice to three vehicles: a VW Rabbit, Suzuki SX-4 or a Subaru Impreza (which broke the price barrier by $2000) We easily eliminated the Rabbit; no all-wheel drive for Michigan snow. We bypassed the SX-4, though not so easily. In fact I later bought one of those for myself.

Ings N Spec Bodykit Subaru Impreza WRX STIThe march of the aftermarket carries on, it would seem. What we have pictured here is another offering from the Japanese home market tuning house Ings. Essentially it’s a body kit constructed to N-Spec rules. N-Spec being a Japanese endurance race series titled the Super Taikyu racing series (yeah little overblown, but that’s par for the course for Japanese names, isn’t it?)..

  • Turbo engine (wow!)
  • Great vehicle for the $30,000 suggested retail price
  • Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive for superb handling
  • Plenty of interior space
  • Nice interior features
  • Fold-down rear seats for added trunk space
  • Watch DVDs while sitting in the driver’s seat

  • Only a 5-Speed manual
  • 1-disc CD changer only
  • Small metal foot pedals slippery when wet

Overall: The Impreza WRX is a rally car at heart disguised as a sedan. It’s extremely fun to drive and easy on the wallet.
