Hits

  • Highly evolved hybrid system operates almost seamlessly
  • Customary Lexus craftsmanship and detail attention
  • Stealth looks avoid typical hybrid cynosure

Misses

  • 225/45R18 Toyo Proxes A20 tires squeal at the merest hint of a turn
  • Middling acceleration can disappoint in the clutch
  • Dash-pad mounted mouse is disconcertingly large, shift lever too small

Lexus introduced this hybrid in January, 2008 at the Detroit Auto Show, some 6 years after the first hybrid Lexus, the RX 330h went into production. The HS is the smallest and least expensive hybrid in the company’s present lineup, with a base price of $34,200. That’s a $10,000 slug more than the parent company’s similar $22,000 Toyota Prius, but as you might expect, the HS, being a Lexus, is a far more luxurious vehicle.

2010 Lexus HS 250h Hybrid
By Derek Mau

Pros

  • Front passengers get heated AND cooled seats
  • Fundamentally a good daily commuter car with luxury appointments
  • 34 miles per gallon overall
  • Smothered with safety-features

Cons

  • EV mode only good for golf-cart speeds
  • Lane Keep Assist (LKA) ineffective when roads are wet
  • Sound dampening is not up “luxury” car expectations
  • Limited headroom for passengers front and rear
  • small trunk space

Ruling: a small, classy car with a softer, quieter ride that is noticeably quicker than the Prius.

Lexus HS 250h

Toyota’s dominance in the hybrid car game (which seems to be a game that they invented) continues unabated. Take the Lexus HS 250h. It’s hugely popular in Japan, so popular in fact that Toyota is going to triple production output for the car. But Toyota didn’t triple production just for the home market alone, no. It would seem that the Lexus HS 250h will soon be seen on the streets of America as well.

The good news for gearheads put off by the somewhat unconventional styling of the segment leading Prius is that the Lexus HS 250h looks like a more traditional car. It’s got an engine compartment up front and four doors and a trunk out back; the traditional three-box design, in other words. It seems to be a look that’s working well, because they’re Hoovering them up in Japan.
