Avus Performance Nissan GT-R

The German tuning firms continue to crank out the modified specials, although in the case of Avus Performance, the choice of rides is a little different. They’ve decided to have a crack at Nissan’s GT-R, a car much beloved by import tuner/Fast and Furious crowd. The end results somehow make the GT-R, a car that seems massive and hulking as it sits in stock configuration even more weighty and bulky.

Sure, a lot of that has to do with the matte black paint scheme, a shade which has been all the rage for quite a while now, and first seemed to pop up in Europe. I’m not saying that it doesn’t have a certain look to it, but for starters I think calling it “matte black”, or even worse “satin” is sort of pretentious. It’s primer black. Yeah, it does lend a hot rod feel to your car, but it also seems like a lot of time trouble and money to go through to make your car look like you still have to finish the paint job.

Nissan GT-R

Two good things meant to go together: Nissan’s highly impressive GT-R and Germany’s even more impressive Nürburgring Nordschleife. It would seem that Nissan have bested their own lap record, and we have the video to prove it, after the jump.

820 Hp Turbo Upgrade For Nissan GT-R From South Side Performance

south side performance turboIn the land of aftermarket “tuning” there’s no such word as excessive.

Or so it would seem when it comes to South Side Performance and their 820 hp turbo upgrade for Nissan GT-R. Obviously what the GT-R lacks is power, right?

The tuning firm, based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, of all places, is offering a set of upgraded stock turbochargers for the GT-R that could boost output to 820 hp when used with other unspecified performance mods.

The technical details go like this: You swap out the stock turbos’ center section with a remachined compressor and turbine housings, (sized 68mm and 53.8mm, respectively, in case your interested). The aluminum compressor wheel is good for up to 32 psi of boost. Yikes! Counterintuitively, the swap appears to be a simple bolt-on affair since the basic hardware is the same. South Side Performance says the turbos make more power at stock boost levels and provide a linear power band throughout the rev range. Right. Color me skeptical, but I’m betting the throttle response is like a light switch.

If you’re interested and have $6,499 for the upgrade, you can get the GTR820RR kit from GT-RR.com who distributes the kits for South Side. Owners can send their stock turbos for the upgrade, and the approximate turnaround time of one week.

Best of luck explaining this to your wife, your judge and/or your insurance rep.

Nissan GT-R Is Motor Trend Car of The Year

Well this is odd, not that Motor Trend picked the GT-R, that makes a lot of sense, it’s just that for once, MT picked a half-way decent car for once.

How long has Motor Trend had the rep of giving away “Car of The Year” or “Truck of The Year” to something half-assed or, even worse, to a car that has been advertised in their pages more than others.

But the GT-R? Shoot, I have yet to hear of anyone not singing the praises of this thing. Sure, it’s styling isn’t perfect; kind of bulky and hulking, and the dash & gauges are sort of too flashy and video game inspired, but no one can fault the driving dynamics of this thing.

The GT-R is no Ferrari, but have you noticed how much it’s worried the guys at Porsche? The GT-R has seriously raised the bar for what is coming out of Japan, sort of stealing that mantel from Honda’s NSX, the last king of the hill from Japan.

This bodes well … let’s see what will top the GT-R, shall we?

2008 Nissan GT-R Deliveries To Begin July 7

2009 Nissan GT-RThere is a lot of hype surrounding the new Nissan GT-R. Is the GT-R an M3 killer or will it fall into a cult status like the Acura NSX?

Limited production, 480 hp, twin-turbo with a 6-speed dual clutch transmission, and can set record lap times at Nürburgring. $70k for a super sportscar seems like one heckuva deal to me. Honey, where’s my checkbook? (Editor)
