Pros:

  • Efficient fuel sipper averaged over 34 actual mpg over the course of a week, with a boasted total range of about 600 miles per tank of diesel
  • A great highway cruiser with a quiet and smooth ride. It’s serene cabin made for peaceful and pleasant road trips.
  • 400 lb-ft of torque made virtually any maneuver seem easy for this relatively small 210 hp 3.0 liter turbo diesel V6

Cons:

  • Hint of a 1978 Mercedes 240D diesel rasp at startup
  • Somewhat flat seating surfaces
  • More complicated SAT NAV unit that requires a semester at DeVry before becoming fluent with the system
  • Only 210 HP for a car of BBW proportions

The Evolution of the Diesel Car Has Come a Long Way
I remember as a young kid seeing and hearing those early diesel cars rattling down the road, usually closely followed by a plume of dark, smelly smoke. Diesel super duty trucks notwithstanding, the appeal for diesel cars remained slim for years. Not until recently has the clean diesel concept begun to take off. We’re now seeing even race cars like the Audi R18 TDI performing at extremely high levels in rigorous conditions. As a result, it only seems logical that the evolution of diesel performance trickles down to normal every day driving cars.

2010 Mercedes-Benz E350
By Greg Gaillard

Pros:

  • Effortless highway cruising with a more engaging suspension than in previous models
  • Abundant, useful and usable technology
  • Glorious front seats designed for long haul comfort
  • An aura of quality, engineering and safety reminiscent of Mercedes’ golden years

Cons:

  • Forced styling that results in an anonymity unfitting of the three pointed star
  • Handling composure is compromised when hustled
  • Materials and build quality are improved, but not quite best-in-class

Re-introduction

It has been some time since I was behind the wheel of a mid-size Mercedes-Benz and I had forgotten how the brand’s DNA is still such a vital part of the experience. The door closes with a bank vault thunk. You sit in firm seats that will carry you through the next 500 miles alert and comfortable. And you are surrounded by the latest safety, luxury and convenience technologies.

Stepping into the new E350 immediately reminds you that you are in a Mercedes. Some say that the 2010 E-Class marks the return of Mercedes’ world class engineering and build quality to their mid-size cars. The E350 is certainly a well-built car, but with Jaguar, Audi and BMW now crowding the segment with similar virtues, is this renewed focus on quality and engineering enough? Or is there something else beyond perceived quality that can distinguish the E-Class from the rest of the pack?

2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet Revealed Early

2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Fans of drop-top driving may be excited to hear that the 2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet will hit the market in May of 2010. Pictures of the car made its way to the Internet and now details of the car have been released before the Detroit auto show.

The E-Class Cabriolet will have two engine options both mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission. The base E350 will have a 3.5-liter, 268-hp six-cylinder. The beefier E550 will have a V8 5.5-liter 382-hp engine.

The car also has an amazing, best in class, coefficient of drag of 0.28. As a reminder, the higher this number is, the greater the drag force the engine must overcome to move the car at any speed. This combined with the 7-speed automatic should improve fuel efficiency. To put the coefficient of drag number into perspective, a Corvette has a 0.28.

Mercedes E 250 Bluetec Concept Gets 39 Hwy MPG

New Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe - E 320

It’s time for the New York Auto show, and although not the first show to spring into one’s mind, this is the show that Mercedes-Benz usually rolls out some interesting stuff. For example, when they first wanted to show their gullwing to the world back in the 50s, Mercedes did it in New York. Anyway, at this year’s show, the three-pointed star has decided to roll out some very interesting and efficient clean diesel concepts.

Case in point: the E 250 BlueEFFICIENCY Coupé. Sure, it’s just “a concept”, but it looks like one that could hit the showrooms by next week if they wanted to (and my bet is that Merc really wants to). The E 250 BlueEFFICIENCY Coupé gets 28 MPG around town and 39 MPG out on the open road. Which is pretty impressive for a car that weighs about what a WW II Tiger tank did. OK, that’s an exaggeration, but Mercedes hasn’t made a light car for 100 years, so getting figures like that is pretty impressive. What’s even more impressive is that Mercedes manages to pull 369 lb-ft of torque from a 2.2-liter four-cylinder direct-injection diesel engine. And on top of that, it’s a diesel that’s legal in all fifty states.

Concept? OK Mercedes, here’s a concept for you: very high sales figures in places like California. Just bring it to market and stop teasing us.
