MINI Countryman
The MINI grows up.

BMW announced last week that a forth car is going to be added to MINI’s line up in early 2011. The new model is named the Countryman and it will be a crossover with optional all wheel drive. The new model will be the first from MINI that has five-doors.

The Countryman measures 161.3 inches in length and has a wheelbase of 102.2 inches. Compare that to the Mini Cooper’s 141.6 inch length and 97.1 wheelbase. The rather small increase in size means that the new model is not nearly as big as a standard crossover. A Chevy Equinox is almost two-feet longer than the Countryman. Ground clearance is higher than the standard MINI, but don’t expect to do any off-roading.

2009 Toyota RAV4
Review and photos by Derek Mau

  • Toyota quality and ergonomics
  • Lots of space for people and their stuff
  • Very good fuel economy for an SUV
  • Star Safety System™

  • 4-speed automatic transmission
  • Optional side-step rails only work for small feet or loading the roof rack
  • Standard audio system is weak sounding

  • Solid, Germanic look and feel. You’re definitely driving a BMW
  • Sticks to the road like…something very sticky
  • Strong engine
  • Well-appointed interior

  • Harsh ride
  • Laggy automatic transmission
  • Nav system clunky, outdated
  • Expensive

  • Feels like a much larger vehicle than it is

2009 Ford Flex Limited AWD Review – Character that can’t be Classified.

  • Cavernous interior
  • Unique styling
  • Incredible fit and finish

  • Lazy transmission
  • Polarizing brick look - aka - biggie-sized Scion xB
  • Some may think it’s overpriced

Ruling: The highest quality, best built Ford we’ve driven in…dare we say…decades?

2008 BMW X3

By Holly R.

  • Plenty of interior room for both humans and all their stuff
  • Easy to drive, easy to see out of and easy on the eyes
  • Decent mileage (when driven reasonably)
  • Really nice features
  • X3 was pretty fun to drive and the smart wipers work really well (we had schizophrenic weather that weekend – perfect to test these out!)
  • Odd placement of power lock button
  • A little stiff in the suspension

2009 Volkswagen Tiguan First Impressions Review – VW goes wild with their new compact SUV

2009 Volkswagen Tiguan
Review and photos by Derek Mau

  • Comfortable ride
  • Quiet cabin
  • Zippy 2.0L 200hp engine with a generous helping of torque
  • View to the heavens with panoramic sunroof
  • Turn-by-turn directions from nav-system is audible and displayed directly in front of the driver

  • Too much body lean with aggressive turns
  • Touch-screen for navigation and audio functions has a slow response
  • The cargo area with the second-row seats in place is too small for bicycles, camping gear and other large items
  • Missing the TDI version with better fuel economy
  • A little pricey with today’s weak dollar and strong Euro exchange rate

2008 Honda CR-V Review – the fun little crossover that could!

2008 Honda CR-V
by Holly R.

  • LOTS of room inside
  • Sits up higher than standard cars – easier to see up the road over traffic
  • For only having 166 HP, it feels like it can really get up and move
  • Due to the size, it’s really easy to park (pretty much anywhere)
  • Voice recognition system

  • Not-so-smooth shifting which leads to some jerkiness
  • Didn’t like the placement of the gear-shift knob (on lower dash)
  • Volume control for stereo in non-intuitive location
  • Side mirrors are small, which led to head check view between the B pillar and a small sliver of the rear window (eek)
  • Voice recognition system

2008 Nissan Rogue Review: Stealing the Market for Small, Spunky SUVs

Wednesday March 5th, 2008 at 6:33 AM

2008 Nissan Rogue
By Alex Kramer

  • Gutsy 4-cylinder engine
  • Confident handling
  • Sleek, bold exterior style
  • Excellent value

  • Yo-yo for a transmission
  • Less than spacious interior
  • Poor rearward visibility

Small SUVs have become one of the fastest growing segments of the car industry, selling over 300,000 units last year. With gas at over $3 a gallon, it’s no wonder people are looking for cars that offer increased cargo room and all weather capability, yet don’t suffer much when it comes to fuel efficiency. The only surprising thing is that some of the major car companies still don’t offer a model to compete in this lucrative niche. For Nissan, that finally changes this year with the introduction of the all-new Rogue, a crossover SUV that seats 5 and offers optional all-wheel drive. Fortunately, the Rogue lives up to its name and should steal some thunder away from the competition. Read the rest of this entry »
