2011 BMW 1-Series M
By Ming Tan

Pros

  • M heritage
  • Powerful and smooth revving 3.0 liter Twinpower Turbo inline 6
  • Unmistakable styling with an aggressive edge

Cons

  • Rubbery shifter diminishes that precise feel of the car
  • Minor exhaust drone
  • Some minor body aesthetic details

I love BMW M cars. I’ve fancied all the generations of M3’s over the years, of course starting with the E30 back in the late 80’s. I love the uniqueness that these special cars bring to the table. I love the double take that I often have to give to these cars when they drive by. And admittedly, I love the hype that builds every time a new M car is due to be released. It’s always interesting to experience the launching of a new BMW. But for car enthusiasts, we always wait to see when the M version will be coming.

Video Review: 2011 BMW 135i vs. Modded 2009 BMW 135i

2011 BMW 135 vs 2009 BMW 135The Driving Sports team comes together to test how a modified 2009 BMW 135i stacks up against a brand new 2011 model. Can the N55 twin-scroll single turbo outperform a N54 twin turbo?

The BMW 1-Series began its life back in 2004 when the 3-Series was moving up in the world and BMW needed another small family car to serve as an entry model. It started off as a 5-door hatchback, but was introduced as a 2-door coupe, a 3-door hatchback, and a convertible in 2007.

The current engine selection consists of a 3.0L I-6 producing 230hp and 200 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.0L twin turbo I-6 producing 300hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission.

The BMW ActiveE – What Would The Jetsons Think?

BMW ActiveE ConceptBy Adrienne Gruben

None of the BMW owners I know ever disappoint in their BMW driverish-ness. They want speed, luxury and prestige, but also to be relevant and hip, sometimes even edgy. When I was a teenager in the late 80′s, my best pal Ben, drove a 1973 BMW Bavaria, and he drove it like the ultimate driving machine it was. He’s now a proud, car-less New Yorker, but back then, how would he have felt about BMW’s recent announcement?

At the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, BMW will introduce the Concept plug-in ActiveE. Based on the 1-Series Coupé, it will be introduced as a production model in Paris in September and then part of a limited private and fleet leasing program in 2011. The company seems willing to risk tarnishing its long-held image as the ultimate driving machine in order to accelerate into the next gen of energy efficient vehicles, but is it worth the risk?

BMW 130 tii

I suppose many of us can identify with that relentless (almost obsessive) pursuit for making something just a little bit better or striving for perfection. A great video by Daniel Michaelis that may strike a chord with a few viewers and brings it all together – visual performance, editing, and a soundtrack that hits all the right notes on cue. Whether you appreciate visual art, high performance cars, or both, I think you will enjoy watching this video.

2008 BMW 135i (E82)

By Peter N.

Pros:

  • Powerful acceleration at any speed
  • Tight handling
  • Crisp radio system
  • Clean interior design with good fit and finish

Cons:

  • Scant cabin storage
  • Slightly restricted visibility towards rear

Introduction
Having been a fan of BMW for years, I was looking forward to checking out the new 1-Series cars that are new to the United States this year. The 1-Series has successfully sold in Europe since 2004 and it was now time for us to get in on the fun. The promise of a small, light vehicle coupled with a powerful engine, wrapped up with BMW’s precision handling tempted me with the possibility of adrenaline-pumping acceleration and confident control. Read on to find out if BMW delivered the goods with the 135i or if our expectations came up shorter than an 8 year-old who couldn’t meet the minimum height requirement to ride the roller coaster at the annual state fair..
