Hyundai Equus

Looks like Hyundai is getting more and more serious as time moves along. Their upcoming Equus, a big sedan with a big engine, is pretty serious in and of itself, and has garnered lots of positive press attention. And now Hyundai is already rolling out variants on the upcoming flagship. In this case we’re talking about a Hyundai Equus Limousine that features not only a longer wheelbase but will also boast a new 400 HP 5.0-liter V8 engine under the hood.

This new Equus limo, will also sport different exterior styling and enhanced safety, comfort and convenience features, which only makes sense, since limos are all about comfort and convenience, right. The Equus Limousine has it’s wheelbase stretched a whopping 11.8-in., which brings the overall length to a yacht-like 215-in., longer than its rivals like the Mercedes S500L and BMW 750iL. Wow, Hyundai is now rivals with Mercedes and BMW?

Moms Speak Out About Safest Cars

Thursday May 7th, 2009 at 7:55 AM

In honor of Mother’s Day (it’s this Sunday, so don’t forget people) I thought I’d do a mom-related car posting. In my search, I found a great Web site called motherproof.com. Let’s face it, mothers do a lot of driving. A group of women on motherproof.com take a look at the vehicles, road-test them for two weeks at a time, and then evaluate them based on performance and values. It’s a great idea. Who knows more about car safety than mothers do?

“We load the kids in, test out the latch connectors and the car seats, and the cargo space, and to really ensure that the car that we’re driving would really be a perfect vehicle for the people who visit our website,” said Sara Lacey, a mom-reviewer.

Four New Cars From The Foreign 4 Knocking at the Door

Acura-Mazda-Hyundai-Kia

Who would have dreamed a year ago that the big names at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show would be Acura, Hyundai, Kia, and Mazda? Who would have ever imagined that a U.S. auto show would be dominated by companies from Japan and Korea?

Everyone thought the Chicago Auto Show would be a great opportunity for the Big 3 to pull out the stops and put a positive spin on a bad situation. But, instead of a much-needed infusion of confidence, all the Big 3 got was an old-school whuppin’ at the hands of the Foreign 4.

While the Big 3 was busy taking private jets to Washington D.C., closing production facilities and laying off workers at an alarming rate, it seems that the Foreign 4 has been hard at work.

Sure, the Big 3 did unveil some great new cars. But, questions still remain. How quickly can they get these vehicles to market? Are they earmarking bailout money for these projects? (They must be.) But, while the Big 3 wonders, the Foreign 4 plunders, and that’s the name of that tune.

4 new cars from the Foreign 4: The 2010 Acura TSX V-6, the 2010 Hyundai Genesis coupe R-Spec, the 2010 Kia Forte, and the 2009 Mazda MX-5 were displayed at the Chicago Auto Show.

2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe: R-Spec

Hyundai Genesis Coupe

Hyundai’s upcoming Genesis Coupe has garnered quite a bit of press, hype and anticipation since it first came onto the gearhead radar. It’s interesting that a brand that was originally derided for being low rent by lots of the import crowd, now has a model that the very same people are all in a lather for. And their foaming is also understandable. Rear wheel drive and good styling can make you a lot of converts in the auto world.

And now the same group of people can get even more worked up, because Hyundai just revealed that the new 2010 Genesis Coupe will also come in R-Spec form.

R-Spec, for those of you that haven’t noticed is becoming the de facto way of designating the factory hot rod specials. I always blamed it on Porsche, but it’s the Asian manufacturers that have taken the nomenclature and ran with it the hardest.

Hyundai CEO Says Big Changes Needed for Survival

Thursday February 12th, 2009 at 2:22 PM
Posted by: m35man

John Krafcik, CEO of HyundaiThe top executive of Hyundai Motor America declared that the auto industry must make some major changes if they hope to survive, including drastically altering its entire business approach, capping executive salaries, raising the bar on fuel economy standards and embracing environmental goals and federal mandates before the government steps in or decides to bail them out.

The Big 3 should listen to John Krafcik, CEO of Hyundai. What he says makes a lot of sense. Had they been doing these things long ago, they might not be in the mess they’re currently in. We’ve gotten too big and bloated in this country; too complacent and too greedy–in the case of many CEO’s and top management—not just in making cars but in just about any form of big business you can think of.

What Krafcik was telling us is not anything new or revolutionary. The Big 3 must know these things as their viability discussions with the big wigs in Washington rapidly approach. What Krafcik outlined is basically what you would read in a book titled, “Car making for Dummies.”

Krafcik is in a position to speak intelligently on this topic. While car sales in this country are plummeting at lightning speed, Hyundai sales are up. It must be a real thorn in the Big 3’s side to have to listen to him, but they should—maybe they can learn something, even at this late date.

I know that a lot of people have been piling and criticizing just about everything the Big 3 does or doesn’t do, but in many ways, it’s well-deserved. If they had been forward-thinking and proactive in doing many of these common sense things, they’d be in much better shape right now.

Lose Your Job—No Problem! Just Give the Hyundai Back!

Tuesday January 6th, 2009 at 12:11 PM
Posted by: goofshow

HyundaiIs this a sign that the end is very near? Desperate beads of perspiration must be breaking out on the brow of our nation’s auto industry. Get this, Hyundai Motors is offering an incentive program for U.S. consumers; if you buy a car and lose your job, you can simply return your vehicle—no flippin’ strings attached! I kid you not.

Here’s what they are offering: Any Hyundai customer may return a vehicle within the first year of purchase (12 months) and WALK AWAY from their loan obligation — up to $7,500 in “negative equity” — in the event of a loss of income. Terrific! I’m going to get a job at Burger King with the sole intent of being fired in a couple weeks due to a horrific, life-changing milkshake mishap just so I can temporarily have a set of Hyundai wheels to spin around in. It’s just like renting a car, but without the rental payment part.

2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe – First Ride. Not Drive, Just Ride.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe
By Kurt Gensheimer

Blings:

  • Two raucous, high-po engine options
  • Shoulders more aggressive than a defensive lineman
  • Neck-snapping Brembo brakes
  • Sub-$30K projected MSRP

Dings:

  • Stiff ride
  • As of today, no planned navigation system option

Ruling: If this pre-production mule is any indication of what’s to come, even amidst a financial Pearl Harbor, Genesis Coupes won’t even make it off the transport truck before being sold.

2009 Hyundai Genesis

We knew that Hyundai’s inaugural entry into the luxury car market was good, but we were pleasantly surprised when Hyundai announced that the Genesis earned a 5-star crash test rating from the NHTSA. You can read our review of the 2009 Genesis HERE.

The Genesis is Hyundai’s first luxury car. The Korean automaker hopes to sell 50,000 units a year once the coupe joins the sedan early next year. The Genesis also is available with Hyundai’s first V8 — a 375 hp, 4.6-liter, 32-valve engine.

In July, the first month the Genesis was available, Hyundai sold 1,200 units. Following is the press announcement from Hyundai.
