Cadillac Volt Coming To Detroit?

Cadillac hybrid Press and News

Cadillac VoltNow, this is just a rumor at the moment, but it’s a pretty good one, so why not spread it?

The rumor is that GM, via its Cadillac brand, will be bringing a Volt platform Caddy to this years Detroit show.

This is important. Why? Two reasons:

1 – Car manufacturers have been dropping out of the North American International Auto Show (as the Detroit show is formally known) like flies in a closed up window, so anything to add spice helps the show. And,

2 – If this IS really true, and GM is actually contemplating bringing out higher-tech hybrids like the Volt in different platforms, then it shows that GM is at least thinking in the right direction.

Now, you could quibble with the fact that GM is showing a Caddy model of the Volt, a model line that isn’t about sales numbers, but about profit margins, rather than showing something like, say, a Volt drivetrain in a sub-$20K Saturn. As a matter of fact, that would have been a much better move, but going with Cadillac does make a certain sense.

GM, as well as others, contend that hybrids and eco-friendly stuff are higher end cars; more development time, more stuff, more engineering, higher costs to pass on. So, you put that tech into a Caddy, and your average (i.e. rich) Cadillac buyer is less likely to complain about the financial hit.

OK, I can buy into that reasoning … but if you really would like to impress people who are worried about Detroit’s ability to “make it”, you could really wow them by also rolling out a Volt drivetrain in a sub-$20K Saturn along side this rumored Caddy.
