Mazda does not stint on safety considerations in this budget class contender. Not many sub-$17 K sedans offer standard Stability Control and Traction Control, but Mazda manages to offer them both as part of the Touring package, along with anti-lock brakes, and emergency brake assist for the front discs and rear drums. 30 years ago, Porsche 911s were delivered with tires sized exactly like those on the Mazda 2. Although the 185/55R15 Yokohama Avid all-season rubber looks pitifully small today, the tires are perfectly adequate to the handling demands of this diminutive sedan. The Mazda 2 is sure footed, its steering feedback immediate, directional changes accomplished without protest. Budding sports car driver will find this Mazda to be a zoomy antidote to the family sedan doldrums.
