2008 Honda Fit Sport Review - Small on the outside but incredibly big on the inside

August 26th, 2008 by twain

Handling
After its spectacular use of interior space, the Fit’s handling is its strongest suit. It’s a blast to drive through the twisties. And its small size and maneuverability make it fun to toss around. There was some tire squeal coming out of turns at full throttle but very respectable for a front-wheel drive car.

Styling
The styling evokes “practical” and partially sporty. It’s not a bad looking car though I confess I’d like to see it with some larger, more aggressive wheels and rubber. Maybe even some kind of body kit…The 2009 model looks a bit more refined though I haven’t seen it “in person”.

Value
For $14-16,000, the Fit is hard to beat. It offers excellent utility, room for 4, Honda reliability, and good gas mileage (if you drive it conservatively). In the econo-box segment, nothing looks better, is more space-efficient, or handles as well. Pretty hard to beat.

Conclusion
If you’re worried about gas prices and global warming but don’t want to pay the premium for a hybrid car, this is a great choice. It’s also very fun to drive, extremely practical, and looks pretty darn good.

The 2009 model might, in fact, be my next car. It’s a little softer in its styling and offers a slight bump in horsepower. 2008 models should be an even better bargain as they introduce the ‘09s.

Who should buy it?
If you want an inexpensive alternative to higher fuel efficiency without giving up practicality and “fun-to-driveness”, the Honda Fit is likely the best choice currently out there. It’s one the highest combined rating of any car I’ve tested. Second only to the Honda Odyssey.
