"A much more convenient method of digitizing the manual would be to have it displayed on the car’s built-in navigation screen rather than a 3rd party device. This is better in practice, but it does not carry the same buzz as a free iPad."

Convenient for who? Possibly the manufacturer, but I can see value in being able to reference a digitized manual outside the confines of the vehicle, say while sitting in the house, not to mention making use of the service scheduling app. No, I don't see it as just "buzz", there is some legitimate value in this offering. I will concede that the tablet should be backed up with a traditional book in the glove box, but it should be printed as a waterproof, tear-resistant, and virtually indestructible, up-cycleable Durabook.
